Now I know that having a new machne sometimes produces a little anxiety when things don’t look or sound how you expect.
The fan in my S1XP seems to have 2 noises - the one I expect (low frequency whoosing sound, similar to my Toshiba), but also a higher pitched ‘whirring’ sound - it is this sound that is more audible due to its higher register.
Does everyone’s do this? I could actually make a recording of it if necessary so you know what I’m banging on about.
Mine is relatively noisy espeically when I’m playing demanding 3D games on it. I say relatively noisy especially since I’m used to the near silent TR. However, it is vastly more quiet than some Dell and Compaq notebooks I’ve used.
I do think Sony didn’t do enough homework with the fan on the Type S. I think they could have found a better fan to use than this one. I don’t mind the airflow noise but the whine of the actual fan is somewhat annoying.
Sounds like it’s normal then. I was going to take it back to the store and do a test against another machine - I know you can get dodgy fans sometimes, but I guess the S series fan is maybe a tad too small, hence the whine..
Most the time i don’t notice mine but some times it does seem to kick up a pace and become a little distracting. I find that if i keep the power setting set to Vaio optimised it seemed to keep it running quiet most the time. Can’t remember if under the Sony power management tool it had some fan options etc Will have a look when i get home later on today.
Does your fan have a mid-range ‘whine’ to it when it spins up though? Most fans when on low are reasonably quiet - all you can hear is the air coming out, but the fan on my S is noticeably louder than my P4 toshiba.
When my fan kicks in to full speed mode its got a whine but its the quietes fan i have ever herd in a laptop.. Under normal use i can barly hear the fan.
Will try and keep an ear out during the day etc for when i use it more and see. If you want take a recording and will have a listen to see for you.
I think the problem here could be that you are graduating down from the silent TR to an relatively noisier S type. So you are finding it a bit more noisy, then what it really might be. But then again, as grovyone said, they could have done a better job with the S type. Or may be its just that the faster the processor the noisier the fan is going to be.
Personally I think its different - the fan on my S type sounds like one on those cheapy fujitsu machines with desktop processors - it has a distinctive whine as it spins up - my Toshiba on the ohther hand, as I mentioned in a previous post, even when the geforce fx kicks right in, does not have a whine - plenty of air flow, but no whine.
Yeap, your fan sounds just like mine. I think the S series’ fans are all like this. I don’t think this calls for any concern as long as it works as it should.
I have my third S now, and the fan is ‘normal’. Noticeably quieter than the first two - with no ‘buzzing’ noise as it winds up, that was soooo itrritating!
If I get a spare moment I’ll upload a sample, but I can’t promise to at this point in time!
On the two machines with the noisy fans the spin up was loud, like a buzzing kind of noise. Once it had got up to full speed it wasn’t quite so bad, but the constant spinning up and down used to do my head in.
That’s the one thing I notice on my 3rd machine - no spin up buzzing noise, just air flow.
I purchased my machine (s) from PC WORLD in the UK so just returned them to the store and swapped them over.,
