Just like everything else, each one is unique.
First, and most important, you need to choose between USB 1.1 and USB 2. Most drives are USB 2 but if you find the el-cheapo ones in the sunday paper they may be 1.1, if thats a concern, you need to double check.
Next, you need to decide size and shape, each one is a bit different.
Finally, i’d research the drive to see if people have connection problems. I know Gateway and Sandisk Mini-Cruisers have issues and people complain.
Some drives include security software (basic password protection), others dont.
