:idea: I’m planning to get a personal website up and running :idea:.
I’d like to host a webserver and email server and was wondering if
anyone knows if southern Cal DSL providers prohibit personal
webservers? :?: They may do this by closing port 80? somehow? I
read about this online.

I also read that some dsl providers are not so strict about people hosting
their own webservers from home.  :o

And yes, I know that DSL providers had a business package that allows
personal webserving. But hey. I was hoping to save a few bucks and not
have to buy a DSL business package.

If you have a Provider who block’s port 80 you wouldn’t have any chance to surf the web. Since all the Web-Browsing-Stuff flows through port 80. 
So I don’t think there is any Provider who blocks this port.

But maybe it’s in their policies that you aren’t allowed to host a webserver.

Sure you can. Proxy servers (like AOL), stateful packet filters (many firewalls) and NAT (like your DSL/cable router) are the most common. It’s harder to do it on a large scale and implementing it would require actual competence, so it’s not normally done by ISPs.  :wink:

Seems like you’re in the know about this stuff.

I just want to create a small personal webserver. Nothing major. Just a few friends and relatives possibly checking pictures on my website.
