[quote author=“GoatCamel”]Hi,
I’m travelling to mainland China. And I was wondering if anyone knows of a GPS map software package for travelling around China? What I want to do is to just buy a plain USB GPS receiver on eBay and use it with the software package.
Map software for the US and Europe are everywhere. But I can’t seem to find any for Asia.
Anyone out there knows of something like that?

Goat…what a laugh! I doubt anything exists outside of metro areas, and as I am very familiar with the Tibetan part of China (are u going there?) I can say with some wisdom that maps don’t exist…either on paper or in a GPS module. Well, there are maps…the best book on the topic is “Mapping the Tibetan World” by Kotan Publishing, ISBN 0-9701716-0-9, but roads change based on weather and construction…currently, the chinese are preparing to pave the trail from Beijing to Nepal (Dram). and becuase of this, certain sections of the road is not passible and detours are the norm. It’s really wet right now, so even a landcruiser is going to get stuck. so,,,
the most comfortable and efficent way to travel tibet is on the back of a Royal Enfield, and our company knows all the backroads and shortcuts. See for more info on tours, and note that they will fix u up with a guide, bike, etc. for a custom ride. good luck and have fun!
