My buddy and I called them and lo and behold…the US version still only comes with 32MB even if you order the Radeon 9700.

Perhaps they will change their minds about this….but for now…you should know it’s still somewhat lobotomized. The support guy could be wrong but I’d hold off on ordering until we can confirm/deny this from more sources.

I have to say that i’ve never heard of a 32MB 9700 Mobility.. would be ridiculous if its true, but then they have been taking bluetooth out of your models for a while now, so i guess its not beyond the realms of possibility for Sony America.

Actually, the Mobility Radeon 9700 does come in a 32MB flavor….as well as 64, 128 and even 256MB.

I’ve seen tech documents to support a 32MB part. Of course, almost no one uses it since it’s sub-par by today’s standards. 64MB is pretty much the minimum nowadays.

Just got off the phone with the Sony gut at the Sony store in Canada, he said that customized versions of S Type will not be available in Canada.    boooooo!

You’ll notice it says discrete and on-chip. Discrete models come in 32, 64 and 128MB versions. The integrated memory come only in 64 and 128MB versions.

Discrete means that the video memory is separate from the chip. To make matters worse is that the 32MB version only has a 64-bit bus. Only the discrete 64MB and 128MB models have a 128-bit memory bus.

All of the on-chip models have the 128-bit memory bus.

Oh, and I’m wrong about the 256MB model. I heard it was possible and might be with a different rev but I’m wrong for the time being.

Well, we’ll see the P5000 and TR are contemporaries while the P7000 is a new model. Let’s discuss this when a new TR comes out.

In terms of the TR/P5000 debate, the TR is stronger in the following categories:

Easier 1GB upgrade
DVD-RW option
Built-in microphone
Built-in webcam
Less weight
Longer battery life (without the need to take out the optical drive)
Internal Bluetooth built-in (or can be added)

The 9700 is a DirectX 9 part and has more pipeplines. It also has a faster clock. The 9200 is a DirectX 8.1 part.

So, there will be a difference in the type of software you can run well.

Either one will be better than any integrated graphics system.  You should see significant performance increases compared to whatever you do now on the TR.

Yeah, from what I’ve seen, the 9200 and 9700 parts are vastly superior to Intel’s forthcoming GMA 900 in real world apps.

Having the newer Pentium M chips should help a lot and increase the performance gap. The 2MB L2 cache makes a huge difference but there are architectural differences with the 0.13 and 0.09 micron processors. Intel has optimized the data pre-fetching and better register management. So, instead of a a Pentium M being 600-700Mhz faster than a Pentium 4 of the same clock speed, it may bump that up to 700-800Mhz faster than a Pentium 4. In some benchmarks I’ve seen, a Pentium M 755 (2Ghz) is as fast if not faster than a Penitum 4 3.0Ghz processor. What amazes me is that it’s able to do this while using a pokey 400Mhz memory bus. I can only imagine what will happen when they move to a 533 or 800Mhz bus.

Actually people…the 9700 on the S has 64mb of ram and Sony does not sell the S with the 9700 with only 32mb. Only the 9200 has that. There was a mistake on the site for a while.

And as g00vy knows…I fall in with him and TruthSeeker… I LOVE the faster video card…and the CPU…and the Bluetooth…and the option to upgrade the HD to a bigger and FASTER one….anyways…yea it looks great…BUT…I’m really liking the NEC Lavie N and it will probably be coming out in America by at least next Spring (I got my TR this Spring) or, if I am able to take a trip to Japan this fall I will get a Japanese edition.

Plus it is definitely good to “cover all your bases”...Id like the 12” or 13.3” widescreen and then a 17” as my desktop…I really don’t like desktop systems themselves…the freedom of laptops is awesome.
