I hope somebody has an idea about this…

I have a Sony TR1A 512/30gb with XP Pro installed on it (fresh, not from recovery disks) and all the latest service patches applied.

Over the last few months I have been having increasingly more problems with the machine locking up.  Each time the symptom is the same—a bunch of horizontal lines and the video appears scrambled.  Once this happens it’s truly dead, won’t respond to pings, the mouse pointer (scrambled of course) does not respond, CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing.

I used to think that this would only happen after resuming from hibernation and using Remote Desktop Connection—however it is now doing it off a fresh reboot.  I have minimal services installed, NAV 8 is one of them.  Any tips????  This is driving me batty.

Have you run a virus checker recently on it, you could have the Welcia virus? You can download the fix welchia checker and virus remover from Symantec.
It is important that all Win XP users have the latest microsoft security patches installed if you run windows update it will tell you. Also I cannot recommend highly enough Zone Alarm as a firewall, and it is free.

It sounds like it might also be a hardware problem. I’ve seen issues like that before on other systems and usually it indicates a faulty memory problem. Did you manually upgrade the memory?

Also, on your next boot, check the Event Viewer in Administrative Tools to see if there are any service failures and any unusual activity. It may help you discover if there are some other underlying problems.

I haven’t messed with the hardware myself… I sure hope that is not it as Sony is pretty bad about their turn around time.

I’ll check the event viewer to see if anything weird happens before each crash.

I also have NAV 8 corp running so it is clean (I think).  Thanks for the suggestions.
