I picked up this line from a forum :

Scores of Indian cities/towns like Cochin,Quilon, Calicut,Trivandrum,Trichur,Bombay,Madras,Calcutta etc were renamed because they attached colonial stigma to the Anglicised name

I have absolutely no idea what that means. There was one more city:
Cochin to Kochi.

I hate these new names because they are harder (especially the one for Madras (Chennai)) to pronounce and don’t sound that good.

Also the international airport in Mumbai had it’s name changed…Sahar International to Chhatrapati Shivaji International.

It was renamed in 95 during a wave of de-colonializing city names. Bombay is an english corruption of the original portugese name for the city. There’s quite a bit of controversy about this due to the fact that it’s become an ethnic pride issue, and as I said before, Mumbai is one of the more cosmopolitain places on earth. At least that’s my colonial white-guy take on the issue. 

I’d be in favor of changing New York to The City.
