XP Install issues

I’m installing XP on a really old laptop that I’ve got to play with for the summer.  It’s a pentium 300 so just scrapes the min specs.

I can get to the stage where it says it’s installing devices with about 35minutes to go when it will suddenly shut down, but not toatally as the power light is sitll on.  Pressing buttons does nothing.
If I hard power off and then back on again it says something about a faulty hibernation file and then tries to resume the setup only for the same thing to happen again…

Have tried several times now to no avail… any suggestions?

What model notebook? It could be a hardware conflict with Windows XP…
