:arrow: If anyone has any familiarity with overheating or with CPU compounds, I need your help.

Problem:
Computer won’t start after I took off the old CPU compound and put on a new silver-based compound.  :!:

Details:
I took off the old white ceramics-based compound with toilet paper (yeah, bad idea…). I then put on the new CPU compound. I realized that I might have put on too much compound when the computer wouldn’t start after pressing the power button.

So I decide to take off the thick layer of compound and put on another thinner layer. I even took off the cpu compound with rubbing alcohol—the recommended way of cleaning the compound off. But it still doesn’t work. Computer won’t start up after pressing the power button :!:

The hard drive is spinning—but not being accessed. The monitor doesn’t turn on as it should on a normal working startup.

I wouldn’t blame the thermal compound. First make sure all the cables are tight in the proper sockets and that all the cards are firm in their slots.

u might be interested then in a brand new tr3 that i will be selling next month after i exchange my dead tr1 in under compusa warrenty! i had to get a new TR3 here in asia, and i am taking the old TR1 for exchange on July 16th.  I will be selling the new one they give me at a very good price…perfect for u and ur dead motherboard. let me know how much any of u would pay for a new TR3 USA model with 512+free 256 chip and a nice silver Sony Vaio Bag…

Agree 100% I highly doubt its the compound unless you got some in the holes where the CPU goes into.

I would also make sure you didn’t bend any pins and made sure your heatsink was put back properly. It the heatsink is off by a little bit (without the proper amount of contact) then it’s possible for the CPU to (a) not start (b) get fried instantly unless it has thermal protection. Also, depending on the processor, you may have cracked the CPU itself…especially if there’s no heat spreader on the top. Athlon XP CPUs are fragile in this sense and that’s why they typically come with shims to pretty too much pressure on the CPU die on the top.

Wait..question: Why did you do that in the first place.  Aside from some kind of BT upgrade, I can’t see why you would take apart your TR.  Not that that’s a bad thing or anything, but…

I think we are talking about a desktop, not the TR.

If it was a pentium 3, 4 or m, the cpu would just slow down to hell and not start if the heatsinc is off, if it is an amd you will ahve a firery flame of fire. tom’s hardware has some nice movies.

That’s not necessarily true. It depends on which AMD processor you’re talking about. All the newer ones have thermal protection on them. Of course, the motherboard needs to have a thermal sensor itself for it to work right. If you bought anything in the last year or even longer then this isn’t an issue anymore…so, that blanket statement isn’t completely accurate.
