I am curious about email packages that work best on the TR as I recently dumped Incredimail for Outlook XP 2003. I love all the function in Outlook, integrated mail, calendar, task list, notes, etc. but the performance on the TR is miserable. So what do u all use?
I use outlook cause it handles pop3 and hotmail accounts. I have about 7 accounts that i am monitoring and that may grow. it takes outlook about 5 minutes to sync all the folders, then when i want to look at one it does it again. in short, it’s slow to boot up outlook and slow when using it. i only have a 44K connection most of the time, so there might not be much one can do with that….
Outlook 2003 - been using Outlook and OE for years but I keep everything in O2K3 because it’s got everything integrated and the junk mail filtering is good, there’s good plugins for it and the latest version is faster than before. The interface is nice too…better than ever before.

groovy, does ur installation of outlook 2003, when started, just seem to stall for about a minute, with sometimes a status of data binding? then once u can click in the interface it starts its send receive, that takes about another 5 minutes (well, i am sure that’s because i am using modem). then after all that’s said and done, when u click on a hotmail/etc. inbox, it does another syncronization, that takes a few more minutes?
this is the only beef i have with outlook 2003 so far. i love the journal! now i dont have to remember where i put my office files, ever!
used to be an avid Eudora user until they seems to give up any newer updates to their products. Recently after installing the latest Office 2003 which came with Outlook, wow I was impress with the faster loading and better gui!
Many. On the TR, I use GroupWise (work email client) and various web mail clients, including my home account and my Yahoo! account. At home I use Outlook 2k3 with SpamBayes for spam filtering.
I’m the exact opposite from tifosi where he likes OE and hates Outlook, but I like Outlook and dispise OE. Go figure.

hows spambayes going for u? i just installed a few days ago and it’s “learning” i guess. i was wondering if it’s going to do a better job than the built in bayes filters in outlook. my oulook install is so slow, i am wondering it it has to do with all these trial plugins i have loaded….

The built-in Outlook spam filter isn’t bayesian. It’s heuristics-based and can’t learn. That’s what I like about SpamBayes. Once you train it, it’s got an amazing track record. My only problem with it is that it’s godawfully slow to sift through new messages.

I’ve seen many references saying that outlook filter IS bayesian and it does learn, i did not bookmark them but heres one:
but i’ve also read that MSN has trained monkeys who report junk mail into a system that then creates a filter file. there was one update last month for outlook that updated the filter.
but i guess no one at microsoft is going to tell us how it works cause how can they trust us not to figure out a way to break it?
From what I know…Outlook 2003 isn’t bayesian although it’s better than whatever heuristic version they were using before. Also, it’s been updated at least once so far. At any rate, it’s very accurate for my use although I’ve decided to give SpamBayes a try since a whole bunch of you are recommending it. It seems to be about just as accurate so far…but then again, I haven’t trained it yet.
For something that’s currently free…it’s pretty damn good. :D
