Apple announced this today, and at first glance it looks fantastic. It works as a compact 802.11g access point that you can just plug into a wall, but has a ton of other nice features as well. This includes wireless printer sharing, just plug a printer into the USB port. You can also stream your music to your stereo wirelessly using this device, and it looks like setup and usage will be very simple and integrated with iTunes. At $129, I’ll be picking one up for the portability factor alone.
It looks like a pretty good deal and should make frequent travelers happy. I think a few people bought a similar ASUS device but this one looks a lot nicer.
I’m really impressed with Apple this time. That’s an incredible little device.
Airtunes is kind of the first step in my wireless iPod dream: One of these days I hope Belkin or another hardware manufacturer makes a Wi-Fi device for the iPod to allow you to listen to someone else’s iPod via WiFi like you can now with iTunes. It would turn Starbucks - or even just chance encounters - into an entirely new experience. 8)

I am one of those who got the Asus device. It does work very well for my needs (hotel rooms with wired access). You are right. The Apple unit is much nicer looking and more flexible. I will be waiting for evaluations before I trade up.
gotta have it. now i’ll be able to control the party mix at the club from the bar, and not have my tr on the stage with those crazy musicians who are always trying to pour drinks on it.
Man you guys don’t know how lucky you are. I went to the link - decided instantly that it was exactly what i had been looking for, went to the apple.com.au store an lo and behold! It isn’t available yet. Who knows when ti will be. Unbelievable.

Well, it’s not available in the US either. Mid July is the estimated time of arrival. So, we’ll all have to wait a bit. Hopefully, reviews will be out by then so we know if it works as well as we all hope.
I would buy be even more happy if they eventually add a 56k modem.
They mention “Connect wirelessly in your motel room using the ethernet cable”
Well, the motels I’ve stayed in want about $10US bucks a night for this option (assuming it’s not the typical flea bag I stay in, which to even ask would result in laughter).
I would swing for it but I usually already have spent ten bucks on a cable blue movie.
Dang. See, now pure aesthetic is why Apple has the one up in the PC and Mac market right now Basically it does what everything else hsa done before, but only in a pretty package. That’s why people buy these things now. Not price, not functionability. But looks. :(
Now I want one.

Thats where a Cell Phone to USB cable comes in. 14.4 is ok if your only doing a few things in the hotel (ie movie times) anything more, it’s worth paying the $10 or so.
I agree with Erik. As much time as I spend in hotels, I would be miserable without a hi-speed connection. I still have to use dial-up in a few locations and it can be painful. I will be glad when virtually every hotel has hi-speed.

Or WiFi. I actually try to book only locations that provide free (or cheap) wifi. I’ve been able to do that the past few trips. I am going on a cruise in a few weeks…the ship is fully WiFi enabled…at $0.40 a minute (eek).
