How much RAM is in your TR and what do you use it for? Do you have it “just because” or are you maximizing the use of it? We all know that simply adding RAM doesn’t make your system faster…share with us your experiences.
Folks with lower RAM sizes may be interested to hear what they can do with more RAM and why they may want to upgrade.
512mb - @256mb my tr1mp was running at a snail’s pace and it was harrowing just listening to the poor hard disk thrashing away. @512mb it’s far better, and I can truly multitask.
Partly to blame is the pre-installed sony-junk which are all nice and pretty, but take up more ram than they are useful.
1GB, after my recent 512MB upgrade. The machine runs just as well as it did before in most programs, but Photoshop CS runs noticeably better with less disk access. I also turned off uneccessary services after upgrading the RAM, so that gave a little speed boost as well.
groovy, thanks for turning on polls, but still don’t see a click anywhere to start one! but i am sure that’s cause i am old and BLIND!
after putting the xtra 512 in i started using ramdisk xp home (256 meg) to keep all my temp files tidy, including internet temps, i also that as a photoshop scratch disk. things are noticibly faster. but question, what is the optimum size for a page file now with 1gig?! i understand that page file size has a correlation to total mem size, but that’s all i know about it. does anyone have any figures?
also would appreciate any other fine tuning tips posted here…

I’m still at the stock 512MB, but I’ve been fighting the urge to upgrade to 1GB. I use the box as a mobile web-surfing platform and network troubleshooter, so I really don’t need it, but more RAM never hurt…
i had less on the TR1 now have a TR3 and noticed that more ram makes photoshop work a bit faster with very large files (over 50meg) which i deal with all the time. I tried the ramdisk things but they never seemed to do squat, even after configuring as temp drives and all of that. Perhaps i was missing something, but what a waste of time that was. I am still not convinced that having all this ram really does anything but make u look cool to other geeks….

[quote author=“AphexTwin”]512. I mostly just use it for web based stuff and movies. Do you guys think it is worth an upgrade to 1 gig?
not sure, but i sure would like to know how to speed up movies played back on the TR3, i have 1gb mem and i think it’s a waste so far when i just use for music, ,DVD movies, email, website updating, entertainment, etc.
i’m thinking i am better off when using photoshop and premiere at the same time, throw in an intenet connection or two. But i never could make any sense out of the Task Manager Performance Tab in XP (or NT for that matter).
i’m currently at a gig of ram, but it’s hard for me to compare it to anything because i upgraded the day i bought my tr. all i know is that my tr is running amazing well, for all the programs i run. does this mean that the gig of ram is reason why things are so great?? nope, but more ram couldn’t hurt.
Running 1GB here, but it doesn’t really help with disk caching as much as I was (misguidedly) hoping. I’d go into a rant about how p*ss-poor Window’s disk caching is, but it’s Friday.
Anyway, it never hurts to have too much RAM these days. A few years ago, now that’s a different story. I think the Pentium in my old Dell Inspiron 2000 laptop had this quirk that limited the amount of memory installed because the L1 (or was it L2?) wouldn’t cache any more than the first 64MB.
I just got a new TR3AP2, and it came with 1GB. Sure, I know I could do anything on 512, and even 256 wouldn’t be limiting. I use memory intensive apps like Photoshop, among various other design tools, so 1GB is handy to have.
