I think Sony is being a little tricky saying that its MP3 compatible but then using a little bait and switch by then saying you have to convert.

1. We should keep religion out of these forums…IMO.

2. It technically is MP3 compatable…just not native Mp3 compatable. As long as it can play Mp3s (even converted) its not tricky.

What frustrates me more is Sony’s proprietariness between their own products.

How hard would it have been for Sony to use memory sticks with the PS2 instead of the proprietary memory cards? Imagine how much more memory sticks would be adopted! Even better is if the PS2 could view photos from your camera directly. Their claimed marketshare would be huge by now.

Why not merge UMD (used in the new PlayStation Portable (PSP)) and Hi-MD (used in the new minidisc devices) and make them cross platform? Perhaps they are based on the same R&D but it would be neat if you could throw your Hi-MD disc into your PSP and listen to your music. They would sell crazy amounts of both!

Sony has the capability to really lead the whole digital hub idea that Apple started. The only problem is that they’re too big with too many silos and disparate projects. I’d love to see more integration between their products as I’d happily shell out the bucks for more of their products.

That’s the problem with being both a content producer and a hardware producer. You can’t serve two masters and make both happy.

Forget that…how about sticking to the same standard…regular MS products wont work with Pro…some Pro wont work with Duo…so many issues within Sony products using MS.

Yeah, Sony was so shortsighted on the whole MS compatibility issue. I believe they’re the only flash memory “standard” that really had these teething issues. The worse thing is that they can get older devices to work with the new stuff via firmware updates but they refused to release them.

I don’t mind the MS and MS Duo in terms of the size differences. Although I’d like to see them move to MS Duo only. I don’t mind the PRO thing too much since other flash technologies do similar things….they just don’t call it differently. There are faster CF cards that cost more than normal ones…but they don’t add the complexity of MagicGate technology.

Interesting thought. Myself, I have always been impressed with the regular MS format size. It’s not as chunky as CF cards, but it feels better in the hand (like I’m not going to lose the damn thing) than SD-sized cards or ridiculously small cards like miniSD or XD cards.
