Sony will ship a keyboardless PC in Japan later this month. It is NOT a tablet but a full functional Windows XP PC! Have a look at it guys!
Myself pretty like the design and the idea. You will be surprised to see it is equiped with the same processor and chipset as our TR, WI-Fi function, same amount of memory (512MB), but with smaller HDD (20GB), and it is ONLY 550g!!!!! I am so amazed to see that there is stated it’s small LCD screen can operate up to 1600x1200 high resolution! I think this is a better idea than the Microsoft Portable Media Center, since it is small, light and also a fully functional Windows XP PC!
Anyway, nice to see Sony is coming to this new sector where it is still a fresh product line in the market. Let’s see what you guys think! 8)
A Clie replacement? It’s not much larger than my Clie and MUCH MORE powerful. I will have to evaluate this one when (if) it makes it to the US. That’s it Sony…push the envelope!
Very cool…my only concern is the battery life…if they claim 5.5 on the extended, it’s prob. more like a solid 3…that is about the lowest I can take for a notebook.
I’m a complete skeptic of the tablet format for general consumer usage. For surfing, it’s an inconvenient format for lounging around and it’s worthless for email without a real keyboard or thumbboard. I can think of dozens of business uses for tablet-style PCs (restaurants, retail, lecturing, etc) but I have a hard time imagining using one myself.
In all seriousness, what do you guys like about the tablet format?

It is the perfect format for an EFB (Electronic Flight Bag). We can use it for all of our manuals, checklists and charts. It saves space and is more usable in the confines of a flight deck than a conventional notebook. It also saves a lot of time when revisions are required (usually every other week).

I own something very similar to this.
A Viewsonic Airpanel. Basically its a 10” LCD screen running Windows CE. All it can do is run RDC over 802.11b.
It includes an oboard mouse and a stylus. You can touch type with an onscreen keyboard or use the handwriting recognition to write. It is slower then a keyboard, but i am very quick with it.
I use it at work but at home I use it in bed or when I am walking around the house IM’ing. It is an invaluable tool, just not worth $1,000 sticker since its useless outside of a 802.11b connection.
This Sony seems to be very similar but a full PC…I just need a bit longer battery life out of a full PC. My airpanel gets about 2 hours, but it’s instant on so I am not waiting for it to boot, plus I can only use it inside so it’s not that big od a deal.

Drachen, all I want is for the TR to have the ability to turn its LCD and lay flat. That way its a hybrid PC / Tablet. You still have the keyboard and all the functionality of the TR with the Tablet upside!!
I’m sure cost is the biggest reason why they won’t make it right now, but I would pay $3,000 for it. :D

I’m still not convinced on the tablet idea…I like the idea about not having an onboard keyboard and saving the weight…we use tablets at work and they are too heavy for me.
The LCD is the difference there. Tablet screens are heavier. I don’t mind a little more weight for the convenience of the tablet (taking notes, portrait mode, touch screen, etc.)

Yeah but as I said before I have an Airpanel which uses a very similar screen and its not nearly as heavy as a tablet. I realize the tablet still need HDs and such but making it one piece and removing the keyboard will save weight.
I just saw this notebook mentioned elsewhere and I’m surprised nobody here picked up on it yet. It’s basically Sony’s answer to the Apple 17” Powerbook . I know a lot of you will like the port replicator.
