Netgear does have good range…too good.  One of my neighbors has this router and I have been asking neighbors on my right and left.  Nobody is fessing up.  Whoever it is, they are more than a hundred feet away.  No encryption, either.  Shame.  Their lucky I have a biblical conscience!

There are a lot of hard working people out there who just don’t know about how to protect themselves.  They assume technology is so good that it has the latest encryption and firewall “on” by default.  Many people just want the benefits of technology without needing the techno-inclination that we have.  You sound like a pretty opportunistic neighbor. :ph34r:

..phew….

As it turned out….it was a DSL-related problem that started it all.. COMBINED with a service pack problem… I installed the patch and once the DSL service also had settled down…the router found the DSL modem.

I’m still not sure about Linksys - if it continues to give me trouble I may kick it to the curb…

By the way…thankyou guys. This site is extremely friendly and it just feels ‘good’ to have a place to ask questions, discuss - and sometimes just vent

I have a wireless G card and a wireless G Router by Linksys and my experience with both has been fantastic. Earlier I had a Belkin wireless B router and that damn thing would go off to sleep every 2-3 hrs…we would need to unplug and then replug the power cable for it to work again.

I also think DLink are Sh!t. I use sitecom - http://www.sitecom.com - my router cost like £40 (ethernet router, 4 port 100Mbps Switch and 802.11b AP), thats about $60 i think.

I started having some issues with my NetGear router recently.  Basically, TCP/IP traffic was very intermittent ... as if I was using a modem on a very noisy telephone line.  I don’t know why this wasn’t happening before.  As it turns out, there was a firmware update that addressed some Centrino-related issues (NetGear didn’t say exactly what).  Flashed the router and all was good.  Hopefully this might help someone else in the future.
