It may VERY well be something that *I* do but even so…geez..how non-user friendly is this!!! AAAARRGGHH!!!!

Ok…let me tell you….

We’re right now two people using the wireless network here - me and a room mate (I have become the designated sysop since I atlease can SPELL kompjutor as opposed to her…). Anyway. I digress…

We have a Linksys 802.11G wireless router hooked up to an SBC DSL modem.

I use my Sony TR1A with its built in wireless card.
She uses her Toshiba laptop with a Linksys G card.

I never really, so far connect to any other networks then the home one.
She takes her computer with her to work and uses the company network, comes home and plugs in the wireless card and goes online here.

Almost every night something is not working here.
We both get that we are connected to our router, 100% good signal speed, etc - but can’t connect to the internet. Can connect to the router fine.

So far I have uninstalled the driver for her card, re-setup the router, re-installed the driver for the damn wireless card - and it works again.

Until the next night when the same thing happend.

Tonight something has happened that I can’t understand. When trying to re-install the router I get a message that the router and the modem can’t talk to eachother - and they are connected though a cable!!!

Never seen that, tried so many different things.

I can get onto the internet through plugging the ethernet cable directly into the dls modem (hence I can post this..) but the router is not working at all tonite (and I’ve done a hardware reset like 5 times…).

HELP! HELP!

Been at this for 2 hours. No fun. Tired. Want to throw it all away.

‘Funny’ as well is that my TR picks up two more wireless networks tonigt (neighbors I guess) - all in all 4-5 wireless networks now. I once jumped onto one of the unsecured ones to see if I could surf using that and that worked some night ago but tonite it is NOT working. NOTHING relating to wireless is working - for either of our laptops.

HELP

(And I’ve tried setting the router to all possible channels..nothing helped).

Is it the virus attack today..?

I went through your hell.  But mine lasted three weeks due to my undying hubris.  I realized then that Linksys is ****, and went back to the store and returned the whole shebang and purchased Dlink cards & routers.  Worked like a charm ever since.

You mentioned that you did a reset.  Did you try resetting both the router and the modem?

Not sure how much this will help, but my cable modem likes to latch onto a particular MAC address and refuses to give out IPs via DHCP until you power cycle the modem.  Normally this problem arises only if it handed out an IP to computer A, I unplug computer A from modem, connect computer B to modem, and attempt DHCP on computer B.  Good hardware reset gives it a nice kick in the pants.

Yeah, maybe Linksys does suck… May try to pick up a Dlink/Belkin router this coming weekend, this is just not working for me…
I guess my friend can still use her Linksys card even if I got another router…

Having all sorts of DSL problems now as well…I can log onto Yahoo Messenger but IE refuses to open anything… Then I reset the modem…and I get IE working…

With all the other networks around, you might try changing your wireless channel.  Try either 1, 6, or 11.  I’m normally on channel 11, but had some connectivity problems lately, so I went to channel 1 and it was A-OK.

Tried… 1,2,3,4,5,6,11 ...

The problem is when I am setting up my router again - using the install disk (something I’ve done 5-6 times now) - I get a message saying that the router and the modem can’t talk to eachother and that I should try to power off and on the modem. Done that and more…. Sigh…

Gonna give up. 11:10pm and I need to be up at 6am… :-(

Hey Tiffany, sorry to hear that so much is going wrong. Here’s a few things you can try to solve the problem.

First of all, remove the router from the equation. So, power down your DSL modem and then plug your TR1 directly into it via an ethernet cable. Plug the DSL modem back in and see if it gives your TR1 an IP address (on a command line you can type “ipconfig /all”). Also verify that you can access the internet. Does your DSL require you to login? If so, make sure you create the appropriate connection.

If it works then you know your modem is fine. Next, reattach the router and then plug your TR1 directly into it (if you have another spare ethernet cable). You will probably need to log into the router (typically at 192.168.0.1) and see if it’s picking up an IP address and is providing DHCP addresses. If it’s not picking up an IP address you can usually force it to refresh to try to manually pickup an address.

As others have suggested, you may want to choose from 1 or 11 as your wireless channel. 6 is probably heavily used by your neighbors. Although you can choose other channels in some cases it doesn’t help any. Stick with 1 or 11. Put the other laptop near the router and see if it picks up the wireless network.

I’m sure you’ve done some of this…but I’m just wondering if you can break down the steps so it’s easier to troubleshoot your problem. What is the exact model number of the router?

I had a similar problem a while back…turned out my 2.4G wireless phone was causing interference. Do you happen to be using one?

I think it does help if you UNPLUG both the router and modem from their power source for about a minute.  Then plug both back in.  Another minor detail that might help is to check your “Show all connections” and if you show a network bridge…delete it.  Good luck.  I have been using the Linksys Wireless G router for about a year and I have only had a problem one time.  When I deleted the wireless bridge…success and I have not had any problems since.

I hate Linksys. The router I have was having horrible problems when I bought it - stuff that should never have been wrong with a commercial routing product released for sale. There were several firmware updates that helped to the point where it’s usable for long periods of time. I’d suggest going to the Linksys site and see if there are firmware updates available. If that doesn’t help, try switching brands to see if it’s the computers or the router.

I’ve had a Linksys G router working on both DSL and cable….after a year or so of this I can say that sometimes it’s just the DSL that sucks. Broadband can often get knocked out in an entire neighborhood for no reason. We had a problem setting up the router with the DSL - for some reason it didn’t want to work with the wireless, sounds like the same problem you had - and after hours on the phone with tech support it worked better (modem talked consistently with the router) but eventually we broke down, got cable, and have been pretty happy with it.

Also we’ve had the same problem with everyone setting the mode to 6 or 5 - with all the wireless networks in the area some of us kept getting knocked offline. I find 2, 4, and 10 are often unclaimed.

I don’t think that helps at all except to say that it might not be the linksys router that’s to blame - though it’s an easy target.

It happened before with the Buffalo Airstation wireless router I’ve been using at home. But shutting down both the router and the modem and waiting about a minute solved the problem. If the modem alone is fine, then get another router.

By the way, is it true that a cordless phone can interfere with the wireless router?

a agree linksys does suck .... i had to use a linksys card with my linksys router to get the best stable performance ...

I would…I use a 54g and love it, but all of my wifi devices are built in and none will support the SpeedBooster so it’s a waste. I personally have never had an issue with Linksys products, and i’ve had quite a few. I know we use D-Link at work and I would never spend $1 on any of it…complete trash IMO.

Yeah, I’m not a huge fan of Linksys routers either. I recently installed a Netgear WGT624 wireless router and it’s been fantastic. It was insanely easy to setup and the signal is amazingly strong. My housemates used to get only good or low signals with our old D-Link AP but now they all get excellent signals. I can even be outside the house lounging on the grass and get an excellent signal.
