Hello! I’ll be going away to the Philippines soon and I’ll be bringing my laptop with me. I have the TR3A and I keep it in the PCGA-CCTR/J case but I’ll be carrying it in my backpack (my carry-on). My question is when I go through the security check point and have my bag pass through the x-rays for screening, do I have to take out my laptop and put it in a separate bin? And, do I have to do this every time I reach a check point? Or, can I just leave it in my backpack? Also, do I have to leave my computer on in case security ask to inspect it? I’m bringing my laptop for picture storage. I have the Sony Cybershot DSC-T1 and I’ll be taking tons of pics and short videos. Thanks :!:
Last year, in May I had gone to London and at JFK they asked me to take out my laptop and put in a separate bin. However, it happened just once at JFK. In London, they didn’t ask me to do that…I just put my back pack through the x-ray machine. No one asked me to switch on the laptop.
In the US and Canada (or at least in Vancouver), you must physically take out your laptop and put it in a separate bin. You may also be asked to turn it on at some airports so be forewarned.
I suggest you go really slow while doing this to hold up the line so that there isn’t a bunch of people waiting on the other side to pickup items. Or, if you’re travelling with a companion then make them go first.
Most airports will have a sign telling you whether or not you need to take out your laptop or not. I normally do it out of habit now just to avoid the hassle of being stopped and harassed by the security guards. Normally, it’s not a problem at all. Just take it out, keep an eye on it and usually there’s no fuss. I’ve only been asked once to turn it on.
TR3MaNiaK - are you talking about the airport in Manila? I haven’t been there in ages but I’m pretty sure they’ll inspect my laptop upon arrival. And, I know JFK is very strict with security so most likely I’ll be taking out my laptop from my backpack.
What’s an avatar? And, how do attach pics/icons in my profile? Sorry
Finally a subject I know intimately. In the US…YES you will have to take your computer out of it’s case and send it through the Xray machine in a separate bin. Sometimes they like to swab it with a dry cloth to check for explosive residue…not a big deal. In Manila you don’t have to worry too much about the Xray machine…they will do a THOROUGH check of every item in every pocket of every bag before you board. Enjoy your trip.

If you look at your profile you will see that you have an option of uploading an Avatar picture. The dimensions and maximum size are listed there. If you require something larger than what’s given then you’ll need to upload it elsewhere and link to it from here.

An avatar is an image which is displayed to the left of every post u make. Mine is my own photo.
If u click the PROFILE link on the top of the page and scroll right to the bottom of the page that opens up u will see the Avatar control panel. There u have several options..upload the image from ur machine, link to off-site avatar, etc. But just make sure the image u select conforms to the rules..i.e. width can be no greater than 80 pixels, the height no greater than 80 pixels, and the file size no more than 10 KB.
It’s almost summer here (US). I’m thinking about going to Thailand next month for vacation, too. and the question is - why do they need us to turn our laptop on? what kinda test is that (swab)?
i knew that i need to put my laptop in the tray (green tray in LAX leftside gate),but i dont know about turing on our laptop.

The theory is; if you turn on the computer and it works…it’s a computer and not a different kind of device…
The swab is testing for explosive residue…of any kind.
IN SFO, and LAX, they require you to just put the laptop in a separate bin, never heard of swabs there before. However, they don’t ask you to turn it on either, at least not for me. I’ve only been asked to turn on my iPaq, cause you all know just how explosive that is.
