This is interesting ! I purchased my TR5MP from the UK market about 2 months back. My dvd rom drive is a UJ 812 Matshita. Now does that mean it can DVD ram as well ? Because i dont think the specifications pamplet that came with it mentioned anything in that regard. It doesnt say anything about the ability to write DVD RAM. Does that mean there are 2 kind of UJ 812 one which writes DVD RAM and one which doesnt ?

Unfortunately Panasonic says “Technical support and service for these models is not provided by Panasonic”. So you may be stuck dealing with Sony. But you could try and hit up Panasonic support directly.

SOtr I guess for you it doesnt make sense to buy this particular drive from sony, coz that would mean they must have disabled the RAM writing ability. You might as well buy them from panasonic directly. Plus at sony its about 434 $ which is really ridiculous !

I have just sent Panasonic an email but i dont think they would help. I’m thinking if there could be a away to remove the lock(Software lock), if there is any in the TR DVD RW drives so that it would be able to play the DVD RAM discs.
Anything possible ?

Anyone know of a firmware utility to change the region setting of the drive? If there is such a utility it ‘might’ be able to reset the DVD-RAM setting too. I can’t find any reference to such a utility but maybe someone else has seen something.

I dont really know if it resolves the issue though, it didnt on mine.( I installed it originally to turn the drive region free )

Found this another firmware page serving most firmwares for all drivers including ours.

Try if you have any luck. They have the k103, i think k101 was the old version.

i think i was one of the last ones to get it for $275.

The UJ-812 is an OEM only drive. Has anyone identified other manufacturers who use the drive? Perhaps their parts departments can provide them at lower prices. That’s assuming a standard connector…

Is there anywhere where you can get it for cheap ? Coze i m not paying 400$ for it ( hey poor student here :D ) + is there anywhere in europe where you can get it???
There must be another drive that the panasonic that fits in the TR insn it ?
