I have recently installed an access point in my home, and now when I connect through this, after about 3 mins, i have to reconnect, even when I don’t have any other connections available or configured. This didn’t happen when I was working directly with my desktop in ad hoc mode, is this due to the microsoft security update? and do I have to install the patch and then disable and enable wireless networking, doesn’t sound like much of a cure to me?

there seems to be a possible time out button hiding in xp for the wireless lan adapter ... go to hardware/device manager/network adapters and look at your wireless lan adapter - i’ve got a lan 2100 3b mini pci, and then under advanced there are power managment settings.  mine is set to automatic.  there is no help on this anywhere that i can see, but maybe, just maybe, the power is being turned off on your adapter as part of a powersaving scheme and these settings have something to do with it?  just a guess! i have no idea, really. :wink:

As it managed to drop the connection even while on ac power, I unchecked the IEEE 802.1 authentication box, under the authentication tab in the properties box for the connection. Now I have a permanent connection, what is the IEEE authentication for????

I had a similar problem and thought I had it sorted out.I notice that my connection is fine until my battery power drops to about 30 minutes…the wireless connection then drops off intermittently until it finally refuses to connect.

There must be some sort of power saving feature that activates when the power level goes low.

For me, the IEEE 802.1x uncheck seems to have solved all.

First day with this machine and it was frustrating at first as my ibook has a rock-steady connection sitting right next to TR2—but now all is great.

I suggest installing the Intel PROSet configuration utility if you’re using Centrino branded TRs. It disables the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration (which is the main culprit of the dropped connections) and instead uses profiles to control connection to any access point. It essentially fixes your wireless connection to a specific access point with the appropriate security levels and does not try to look for other access points (which Zero Configuration does) so you maintain a solid connection.

If your TR uses a non-Centrino chipset then you’ll need to find out which one (most likely Atheros chipset based) and then see if you can find the OEM configuration utilities for it. I know of one member here who has done so already for their TR2AP3. You may want to ask them which one they downloaded.

Is it the IN-911600802DJ.EXE on this page   ?

I’ve searched high and low on the Intel site.  All it says is get it from reseller’s website.  There’s nothing on Sony’s European website.

Above is all I could find but it’s pretty vague to say the least and only lists the PCG-Z1 series machines.

Did you read this post already? The link on the first post shows you where to download the utility. It’s actually from ASUS but it works perfectly fine with the TR.

I used the same one that came with my dell inspiron centrino notebook… works fine… they have the same chipset etc, so basically have to work… some manufacturers may add their own little “add ons” or put their logo in the config page… but essentially, they all do the same thing…

I had the same problem, but the proset drivers fixed mine… I have a complex network set up here, with 6 APs in close proximity, so had a bit of work setting it all up…

GadgetMan, I notice you are using a couple of Belkin 54g AP’s.  That’s what I’m using.  Occasionally mine hangs (ie no wireless connection and can’t access config page over wired network) and to recover I have to pull out the power cable.  The times it’s fallen over I’ve noticed someone else in my building is running a wireless network so I thought that may be something to do with it.  Have you ever seen this with yours?
