I just got my mobile pc mag today and they reviewed 10 ultralights in it…one of them being the TR3AP3. I will scan it and put it up next week, since I have to give my GRE test this Sat…so have been poring over it for a few days. If someone else also gets the mag and can put up the review it woud be great.
Thats cool, I wonder if it’s very different from the MaximumPC review last month. The TR is really making a name for itself. When the TR1 was out I couldn’t find anyone who even heard of it, let alone a review.
[quote author=“TruthSeeker”]...looking forward to seeing that review.
I was too…until I read it. They only gave 3 out of 5 stars for the TR. They pan the TR for having a small screen, yet don’t mention it at all for the fujitsu p5020d. Also, they seem to have some kind of strange giant hands b/c they say they hit the 9 key when trying to hit the I. Interesting, since I have some pretty large hands but have no problem at all with the sony’s keyboard.
And it took them 4 hours to create the recovery disk set?!?! Something is seriously amiss here.
It was mentioned that the TR is seriously overloaded with lots of detritus software, but we all know to remove that junk.
It wasn’t an entirely unfavorable review, but I hate seeing something I love getting an average rating.

first off, small screen rock. And yes, if you want portability, be ready to sacrifice screenspace. That shouldn’t have counted much, after all you’re reviewing ultralights, not things like toshiba’s 17 ” brick. Small keys? God, I have huge hands and they’re perfectly fine. Took a day to get used to, but I’ve never hit keys on accident. However, 4 hours for the recovery disk is actually acceptable. It took me three hours to burn the little ()&@#, and it turns out that all three times I did it didn’t work. As for detritus software…isn’t that how it is normally these days? Dell comes with crap ‘Trial’ M$ junk, and people like Toshiba and HP have AOL trials and scummy little things everywhich way. Look on Cnet for a Tr2A Review. They noted everything above, but still gave it an 8.5 out of 10 (or so I recall) placing it on a par above the Apple laptops. A 3 out of 5 would be the Toshiba 17” monster, not this baby. Even with its quirks, it’s still an awesome piece of work.

I think they are taking into account the price when they are reviewing the notebook…something with a Sony you must overlook to be fair.

But aren’t most ultralights running around the same price as the TR series? Dell’s cheapest the 300m is around 1800 give or take, with minimum specs. The TR3A is (when i checked off cnet) around 2100. But then again I don’t see why they’re reviewing the TR3AP3 instead of the TR3A. In order to properly compare this laptop with others, all the competitors should have their specs matched as well.

When I went to look at the Fuji. it was $250 less, similar specs…maybe I found a good price…
i will put up the review in a few days time but a few other things in the review:
battery: 2:58 (ibm thinkpad x40: 5+ hrs..is that true?)
overall description: mile wide and an inch deep… just because of its wide screen
the only real thing they have praised abt it is the clarity of the xbrite display, and they were not too critical abt its price because of its loaded features.
just incase ur wondering y my fingers are in the photo…it was to make the left hand side page flat so as to take the light that was being reflected slightly more to the center of the mag..it was the best picture i could get…
1 thing that I love abt this magazine is the actual size images of most products that they review…
ya, but ne ways even the TR with the extended battery would give almost the same performance (may be 6-6.5 hrs)...I mean when u use regular apps, watch movies, etc.
It seems to me that most reviews I read of Sony products are less than favorable. I don’t know if the products are expected to meet a higher standard or it is just an anti-Sony bias. In a lot of cases Sony products are not even considered in comparisons where they have a suitable product. It doesn’t really matter to me as I rarely agree with “critics”.

Well said, Vaio Jet. Took the words right out of my mouth.
That is simply an awful review. Again, it’s a reviewer who hasn’t done any research on the notebook and knows nothing about small form factors and mobile computing. All these supposed experts just judge all notebooks the same which is a disservice to consumers.
He obviously has large hands so of course he was complaining about the keyboard. A truely impartial review would mention that people with small to medium sized hands would have no problems with the keyboard. Also, how the hell does a widescreen design make a keyboard weird? I’d say that keyboard width is much more important that depth.
And where did he get his 4 hours to make the recovery discs? I does not take that long. Granted it could be solved if Sony just shipped the discs but it doesn’t take 4 hours.
And since this is talking about subnotebooks…how come they didn’t mention anything about the battery life? That’s probably one of the most important features of subnotebooks.
Awful awful awful. I’m not saying that the TR is simply the best (although it might be for some) but it certainly deserves a better informed review.
