I just bought a HP IPAQ 4150 mainly to be used with a GPS, but it has WiFI built in, so I was wondering if I could connect to my TR1 using WiFI and browse the internet on the IPAQ - not sure why I’d want to but is it possible?

My TR1 is connected to the internet using an ethernet cable so the WiFi is not being used. I don’t know much about WiFi but have seen Access Points mentioned - is this what I need to configure the TR1 as?

You can connect it via ADHOC which means device to device, no router. However, I am not 100% sure if it will automatically share the internet connection or not.

I’ve only just got the IPAQ and am not at all familiar with it… Any detailed help would be greatly appreciated.

I turned on WiFi on the TR1 and on the IPAQ but the IPAQ showed no networks found - do I need to change something on the TR1 connection?

Also, I have noticed that I can access the web on the IPAQ when it is docked to the TR1, must be through the USB…

From my experience…your TR can share the Internet via wi-fi but only if it’s connected to an ethernet cable.

Basically, the TR would be plugged into an ethernet cable. You would turn on ICS for the connection. Next, you turn on the wireless of the TR and set it to ad hoc mode. Then you’ll need to connect your iPaq to the TR (they should see each other) and it should work. I’ve done a configuration like this before and it was pretty decent although there’s no security.

I don’t think you can do it simply with the wi-fi connection but I could be wrong.

Here’s how to do it:

Start->Connect TO->Show all connections

Right click wireless connection -> properties

Wireless network tab -> Advanced

Computer to Computer (ad hoc)

Close

Advanced Network Tab - > Allow other network users to connect thorugh this computers internet connection

tifosiv122, thanks very much for your help, but when I ticked the box to share the wireless intenet connection, all my software (Explorer, Outlook) started using a very slow wireless connection that must exist somewhere else in this building, rather than my ethernet connection.

I know it sounds strange… but I did do as you suggested and even rebooted - all my internet stopped going through the ethernet and went through the very slow wifi link. Obviously someone near me has an open wifi link that I was connecting too, even though I’d configured the wifi for computer to computer

(I haven’t even turned wifi on on my Ipaq yet…)

Progress… I can now access the internet through the ipaq, but I don’t know why.  I set my Local Area Network connection to allow other comuters to connect using ‘this computers internet connection’, set the wireless to ‘computer to computer’.

Now in availaable network connections on the TR1 I see an available network called “14-1”, and I also see this in my Ipaq, so I connected to it and it works… when I load a page on the ipaq I see both the wireless and the ethernet connection lights light up on the little computers in the task bar of the TR1, indicating use…

So now my question is why does the TR1 show up as “14-1” on the IPAQ, and why can the TR1 see itself as a connection? or is it seeing another peer to peer connection as well? How can I change the identifer of my TR1 to be something recognisable?

I don’t undertsand, but anyway, its working so I am happy.

Next job is to get VNC running on the TR1, and then take control of it using pocket vnc on the ipaq - nice!

I only know of Palm VNC because I own Clie’s, so I can’t help you there.
