I have had a virus called netsky on a desktop machine. Norton has sorted the problem but now I am left with thousands of virus warning messeges telling me about every file that was infected. It is cripling the system and everytime I klick o.k another virus alert messege pops up.
I ran a patch which says that I no longer have the virus. But now I am left with thousands of windows telling me about each file the virus was attached to. It is driving me mad as it is making the computer unusable. Just opening a window takes forever as the computers resources are taken up with the virus alert messeges.
[quote author=“AphexTwin”]No I have not done that as the system is so slow. Do you think a virus scan would clear the messeges?
IMO if your still getting the messages your still somewhat infected and until you run a full scan you might not get rid of them.
I suggest restarting your PC. As soon as windows boots, run a full virus scan and have it auto fix the problems. When it’s done (it could be 1 full day) restart and see if it fixes it.
Yeah, go with Erik’s suggestion. You need to run a full virus scan to make sure. When you system start booting (after the welcome screen or Windows logo) hold down the SHIFT key to keep extraneous startup items from loading (except for the pesky registry ones). Then, as Erik says, run a full scan…and make sure you have the latest updates before you scan…just to be sure.
Just to update, I think the virus is removed. In the end I had to disable virus auto protect to stop the virus alerts, and then rebooted in safe mode and ran norton 4 times. The first time it found 557 viruses, the second it found 1, and the final 2 times were clear. I have enabled auto protect rebooted a couple of times and the system is running at normal speed.
Thanks to everyone that gave suggestions. This was my first virus and made me realize why I love the mac platform. :D

Well, at least norton wasn’t crazy…557 infected files would slow down your system.
Glad its all clean…keep that virus protection on and don’t open attachments unless you know exactly what it is.
