Does anyone know of a good quality DC to AC power inverter that I can plug into my car cigarette lighter to power my TR?  Also,  are these things safe to use as far as surges and other electrical problems?  If anyone has any experience or info that would be great.

I have one that I bought at Best Buy. It’s the SIMA SPV-1. It actually plugs into the 12V cigarette lighter plug in my car and provides two standard wall plugs. I believe the model I bought supports up to 140W maximum continuous power with 300W peak. It operates with the vehicle engine turned on or off and the AC receptables are short circuit protected. It also has intelligent overload protection. It was only $39.99 which is a pretty good deal.

I’ve used mine on trips from Los Angeles to Las Vegas or San Diego and it has worked flawlessly. It’s great when my passengers want to watch DVDs while I’m driving.  :shock:

It also comes in handy because I can also charge my digital cameras/dv camera when I’m on the road and I’m low on batteries.

It should work. However, to be sure, check your owner’s manual to make sure the your car’s standard lighter can support the 12V needed for a device like this. I have a 2001 Toyota RAV4 which really isn’t a big car so I’d imagine any old sedan will have the proper plug.

I used such an adapter to power my TR on a recent trip into the boonies, and my car battery never died or even got low on power. As long as you drive it around at some point, the car’s battery will recharge and you’ll never have to worry about draining it fully.
