My TR doesn’t seem to have a Line-In…  Unless it’s hiding!!!

So what’s the best solution for this shortfall???

I wanna record my band using a feed straight from my mixing desk.

That’s the microphone jack.  TruthSeeker and Shihiko - are you sure that you’ve used that as a line-in jack? (and more importantly that the audio is exactly like hardware that HAS a dedicated line-in jack?) If so, then you’ve done something that I’ve been trying to do for a while!

I was hoping that one of the two jacks would double as a line in, but I haven’t had success with either. I can record with the microphone,  but the audio is really loud and sometimes ceilings to harsh static.

So now you have me wondering if there’s no native support for hardware that lacks a line-in jack? I wonder if you need to have software installed that will give windows the information it need to USE it as a line-in jack. My OS is a fresh install with only the minimum Sony drivers - maybe this is the reason I’m having so much bad luck with this. If this is true, (and anyone knows which Sony software installs the drivers needed for this) please let me know.

the mic in is line in.  what are you trying to use?  whats the problem?

It does 24/96 recording and playback which is what most musicians and audiophiles crave. It’s around $120 but you can get professional quality results.

Oops…my bad…that’s one option but there is another more mobile option…it’s also 24/96. It has line AND optical input.

I have the M-Audio Revolution 7.1 on my desktop (along with Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 speakers).  I don’t do much recording, but, for play back, it can’t be beat.  I was using a SoundBlaster Live! before ... and the M-Audio card blows it out of the water.  :twisted:

I think the Sonica Theater is basically the portable version of the Revolution.

IMO, mic-in and line-in work pretty much the same except sometime you got microphone plugged into mic-jack and you want some other devices to connect to you computer as well such as modem, so that goes in to line-in.

Not always, but usually, the microphone port will have some kind of amplifier.  At least in software, I’ve seen drivers offer a +20dB (or so) boost for the microphone port.  I think some more expensive hardware will differentiate the mic-in port with a hardware amp.

Mic In jacks are much lower impedance than Line In jacks. There’s a risk of damaging the jack if you put something that’s too hot into the jack. Mic In jacks also tend to be in mono rather than stereo.

Well the TR does have it’s own built in mic… so that red socket can be used as a cheap Line-in

Yeah, the M-Audio stuff is very good quality, used a lot in the pro-audio world… My friend has one of there multi-I/O pci cards…

The Transit is probably the ticket for what i want, just need the line in when out on the road…

We don’t often mix gigs in 7.1 !!!  I, and quite a lot of other people mix most live gigs in mono!  Spesh the small ones…  Stereo, like surround, only works if your standing/sitting in the right place…  and most people are not on the centre line at a gig, so mono works perfectly well… for everyone…
Mic inputs have quite a sensitive Mic Pre-Amp… and is, as said, mono… so it’s not suitable for Lin-In…
Perhaps a Line-In for the TR4???

You may want to check out the tascam us-122. Its a fantastic USB powered sound card thats solid in build (metal), decent sized and fully specced up. 24/96, multiple inputs and phantom power - I use it all the time with my Tr1 and have just finished mixing some tracks for our new EP - in the car!! I love the portability of this little wonder!
