hi,
i just got my tr3 and i want to set up a wireless network at home.
Could you tell me what i would need to setup a network?
do i need a wireless access point? or do i jsut purchase a pci wireless network card??

i currently have 2 PCs, 1 connected to the internet.

I will start with the basics…
First of all there are a few other threads on this site that discuss this topic. Your TR3 is already WiFi capable (no card required).  You will need a WiFi Router (Linksys, D-Link…).  If your other computers are not WiFi ready you will need cards or usb WiFi units for those.  More details will follow this basic post by the resident experts.  Good luck.

Say you have a desktop, the TR3A and a cable service for the internet. You’ll need a wireless router, as VAIOJet said.
1) Remove the cable from your desktop ethernet card.
2) Connect the cable to the router wan port.
3) Connect the router to the desktop using an ethernet cable (usually provided with the router).
4) Follow instructions on the router manual to set it up (you may have to call your ISP to register the router mac address).
5) Make sure ‘wireless’ becomes enabled after you set up the router.
6) There are some security features you may want to turn on. I like to limit wireless access by registering the mac address of the TR wireless card. This means only your TR is going to be wirelessly accepted by the router.
7) Turn on ‘wireless’ on your TR and wait until it finds a connection.

One thing you may consider, depending upon how you want your components arranged is having a separate router and access point.  For instance, your desktop and broadband may be located at one end of the house, but you may want to move the access point for better wireless coverage.  You can use a wireless router, but you may double your cable lengths in some situations.

Can’t you just get two PC’s working by adding a PCI Wireless card to the desktop without a router/access point?

No.  PCI cards receive the wireless signal.  So does the wireless adapter built into the TR.  You need a device that can send the signal in order for your computers to receive it wirelessly.  This is where a gateway / router / access point come in.  They will send the signal from your modem.

I guess in Peer-to-Peer network mode he could share Internet connection between the two PCs without an AP.

Yes you can.  Great point.  psikey seemed like there was reference to a wireless network, though.  Very few people want peer-to-peer when you have a laptop. :wink:  Why waste mobility?
