Ok, I need help from the savvy Mac/Win users out there. Well, specifically those who know Macs and OS X.

Is it me or is it extremely painful to setup an OS X system to automatically mount network shares? In Windows, you simply map a drive and check the box to reconnect at logon. I can’t seem to figure out how to do this on OS X 10.2.8 or 10.3.3.

Any help would be appreciated. I’ll take command line ways but I’d like to know if there’s a GUI way to do it. Some of my clients want to be able to do this themselves in the future so a GUI version is much more acceptable.

You could do it through AppleScript and the Login control panel, but I just have aliases to other networked computers in the Dock. It’s not as automatic as having it automount, but it only takes one click to bring it up. All you have to do is mount the server and then drag it onto the right side of the dock. It’ll then create an icon that will mount the server whenever you click it. I’ll look into the AppleScript later.

That is how I do it too.
Is it going to be easy for me to network to my TR when it arrives. I have little experience with windows networks.

I actually figured out using some freeware. I think it’s called automount maker and it basically creates the script for you and then you add it to the login items and it works. I’m still shocked this kind of functionality isn’t built into Mac OSX in a more straightforward manner. Mapping drives or shares is kind of essential in office and networking environments.

I remember when this was a standard feature in the OS 8/9 days. You could just check the box next to the server when mounting it to have it automounted at startup. OS X was a big step forward, but Apple removed a lot of the things Mac users had gotten used to (labels, automount, Apple Menu, control strip, etc) and have been adding them back in with each paid upgrade.  :ph34r:

I usually end up creating a shortcut to the network share on the desktop and I thought there was something in the Login settings that let you start apps/Applescript so you may have to “script” something to enable automounting.

I’m not sure but I think maybe DAVE does automounting and works great within a Windows network environment.  But I do agree, network shares should be easier to configure in OS X.
