All of us plunked down a lot of cash for these silver and white beauties, but how do we use them in real life?

I tend to use mine mostly on the road and carry it around with me constantly. I surf the Net and check email while commuting (on T-Mobile GPRS via my SE T610) and at various free WiFi hotspots around NYC. Occasionally, I’ll use it at work for network troubleshooting. As much as I’d love to, I really can’t use it as my main desktop unit. I’m still way too big a gamer to make that leap!

I’ve always been a laptop-only person, my last personal desktop was purchased in 1998. At work, I have a 2x2GHz PowerMac G5, which chews through graphics and programming tasks nicely. The great thing is that I can take my work home on the TR and still get a good amount done.

used to run a Piii 550 overclocked to 800 384MB ram and a laptop of some description. went from sony C1XD to compaq tablet pc tc1000 to the TR1.

Now I’ve shut off my desktop and use the tr1 exclusively. It’s simply a lot more elegant, faster and most importantly, quiet. the desktop is just a 200GB fileserver which I occasionally boot to retrieve backup files

When I have to work with 30 IE windows full of research papers, I simply plug it into the 18 inch LCD monitor.

cellery: Your work machine is drool-worthy. What sort of stuff do you do?

apyyc101: You should check out both MyIE2 (a wrapper for IE) and Mozilla Firebird . Both offer tabbed browsing and I find they make much better use of space than IE windows all over the place. Best of all, both are free. I do web development and I’m fond of both of them.

I’m the online editor for a newspaper, so I do a lot of graphics work along with photo editing and random coding. I’m glad for the new machine, as I was limping along on an old-school first generation iMac.  :cry:

I use my TR for pretty much everything. This is not a first for me. When I first travelled and worked overseas, I bought my first notebook after only using desktops for years. At the time, it was a Sony SR and I used it for everything. Moving onto a Fujitsu Loox-T and then a Fujitsu P2120, changed my usage. Since I had access to a desktop system, my notebook simply became a secondary system. Also, the Transmeta based notebooks simply weren’t powerful enough for my heavy multitasking demands.

Because I’m back to needing to be mobile, the Sony TR is now my main machine and is used for everything. It’s basically powerful enough for all of my work with the generous memory and very good speed. My desktop system is now “secondary” and is only used for heavy lifting and playing games. I also do web application development so the TR actually makes it possible to get a lot of work done whether I’m at home, at the client site, or at Starbucks. My typical setup includes running Adobe Photoshop, MyIE2 (tabbed broswer), Mozilla, Outlook 2003, Trillian, Macromedia Homesite 5, Topstyle 3, and iTunes. I have all of this stuff open all the time and switching between apps is a piece of cake. I’m also running full eyecandy as well and the system performs without a hitch.

i have not left home without the tr2 since i got it a month ago.  i moved cross country and drove from CA-NY and loved having it with me.  i used it with the t-mobile service while driving to listen to internet radio and it actually worked well for a while.

i plan on using this as my main machine / work machine to give sales presentations etc..
