Setting the scene:

I know virtually nothing about networking.
I have my new Tr2MP.
I bought a Belkin 54g PCI WiFi card which is now in my Desktop.

I want to share files between both machines & access the peripherals & internet connection of the desktop.

Belkin technical got me so far setting up an Ad Hoc peer to peer network & I see what looks like the Belkin working OK showing a Sinal strength & Speed etc.

What I can’t understand is on the TR2 I have the WiFi connection icon saying I have a Signal Strength: Excellent,  but when I click the Status I just get a flicker of a dialogue box and in the Network Connections dialogue, the WiFi shows up as part of the Network Bridge but when I select the WiFi icon the Sigal Strength displays No Signal ???

Can anybody help or point at a good resource for a complete novice in networking.

At one point I could click status & see the dialouge but after switching machine back on again I can’t.

I’m not so sure if you need a network bridege for your peer to peer connection. What i understand is network bridge is uses for merge another connection together. and how about try to browse Your “my network places” and see if you can get to see another computer.

I just used the ” Setup a Home network” option on both machines & it auto set them in a bridge. Big concern at this stage is why icon in task bar says strong sihnal but in dialogue box says no signal & status not showing a dialogue.

The bridge may be causing a conflict.  I ran across this same problem.  Since the problem is with your TR connecting, give Sony tech support a call.  They helped me to make a few adjustments and I was up and running in no time.

Spent a couple of days on & off with Belkin technical support (great considering a low cost purchase) & they have confirmed the Belkin is working OK by setting a Ad hoc network on the Belkin side which the TR2 see’s but when setting up one on the TR2 side it doesn’t show up in the Belkin.
I changed Channels in case of interference then Belkin asked what entries were showing in the Advanced section of Device Manager for the TR2 Wireless device which only showed a few compared to many for the Belkin.
They were expecting to see at least a Channel selection & one other but they were not there. The conversation finished by stating that newer drivers are needed for the TR2 wireless to establish the Ad hoc network and to contact VAIO.
Found a later driver on the VAIO-LINK site but didn’t put any additional items in the Advanced section.
Any advice on getting to a point where I can get the two machines sharing files & internet connection.

If you are under warranty, call Sony Tech support.  I know they can be a bit spotty.  The general concensus here is that sometimes you get someone who knows nothing and other times you get someone who knows even less.  Despite this, however, I have been able to get the problem resolved because they manage somehow to produce a solution simply because they work on the phone with these units all day / every day!

There has been one occasion where I got someone who really knew what they were doing…like gr00vy. :wink:

It is usually at this point that most people leave a large company because they feel they can make more on their own or somewhere else. (higher stock value = cheap labor)

Yes, only got it in last couple of week. Started an e-support case with them. No response yet.
