I can’t think of one single app or utility that I absolutely couldn’t live without. I use my TR mostly for web, email and a little web dev. I’ve got 3 browsers, 3 email programs (not like I can’t use a web browser anyway), 2 office suites and I know there are dozens of web-centric text editors out there. For me it’s not so much the software as the task.
Even though I’m a programmer, I guess I’m still a ‘hardware guy’ at heart.
- Homesite (Macromedia)
- Mame32 (the TR matches perfectly with a PSone controller..)
- Winamp (better than iTunes? well.. let’s not go there shall we?)
- Unreal Tournament (you never know WHERE you’ll be challenged and practically anyone can run this version..)
I use an app called E-Sword. It helps me to do some deep study of the Bible. For me, it takes the place of about a dozen books piled up on my desk at home. In a nutshell, it is the most robust study tool for scripture I have ever come across. Having this app and about 2-3 hours of free time is almost intoxicating.
Truth: that would have been a handy app to have had in high school when I was in Greek class. Translating John (simple, more-or-less straightforward stuff) between stints of doing Homer’s poetry and Plato was one of the few times I was glad to read the bible.
Any imaging app. is an excellent tool for me. I’ve used 2 so far…drive image 2002 and acronis true image 7.0. Having ur OS up and running within 15-30 mins (compared to 5-6 hrs of installation…winxp + customizations + other apps) almost like b4 is an outstanding thing.
1) photoshop….
2) counterstrike 1.6, i know, i’m a littl behind everyone else…
3) VLC (videolan media player, better than wmc, winamp, and even divx)
4) CoLinux [thanks to the guys for the link]
5) and i’m surprised…nobody mentioned, ‘Microsoft Word?’
Now that is a must-have.
I have way too many “killer apps” that make my life a lot easier.
MyIE2 (http://www.myie2.com) is an awesome IE replacement that gives you IE’s render abilities but adds tabbed browsing, integrated pop-up blocking and filtering, auto scroll (for lazy reading), group organization (you can have it open several sites at once), and it remembers the pages you were last on every time you re-open the browser.
WebDrive (http://webdrive.com/products/webdrive/index.html) is one of my favorite “ftp-like” programs. Essentially it can map any FTP site to a drive letter. I know other programs can do this but I haven’t found any as slick as this program. It’s so seamless and extremely useful.
Trillian Pro (http://www.trillian.cc) is also indispensable since I have accounts on all the major IM services. In some cases I have multiple accounts so Trillian makes life easier by only needing one program to access all accounts.
There’s more but I’ll have to decide on how worthy they are…
Technically I did when I mentioned having 2 office suites. I’ve got MS Office 2003 and OpenOffice.org. I prefer MSO for its polish but I could deal with either if I needed to.
gr00vy: I love MyIE2 too.
After thinking about it for a while, I guess the most indespensable app I have is my sidebar ( Desktop Sidebar )... but only on my desktop systems, not my TR. (not sure if that counts or not)
just downloaded a free program form the web called shrink dvd. It copies dvds and i am really impressed. YOu do need nero or such like to burn the dvd’s but that is the only thing. http://www.dvdshrink.info/
