Hi, I am new to the forum. I have been considering to buy TR2AP3 for its small size, sharp screen, and a long battery life. Does anyone knows if the built-in 802.11g WiFi interface can be firmware upgradable to support WPA?

The spec says the WiFi interface is a mini-PCI card. Is this mini PCI card user upgradable?

How long does it take to put TR2 to/from suspended mode?

I really hope someday notebook computer as be turned on/off like PDA. So I can check email quick and turn it off with little wait time.

Good luck getting any answers out of Sony tech support about compatability with anything remotely complex. Their support site is useless. FWIW, I know that the Centrino cards are WPA-compatable as long as you install the WPA update from MS (and the driver on the Sony site for TR1s). I believe they also work with LEAP.

The mini PCI card is technically upgradeable. I’ve read about people popping the mini PCI cards out of 802.11g-capable Linksys routers and putting them in their Centrino-based laptops, but it also required a driver install. IIRC this makes the modem useless. YMMV.

I have a TR1A, and it takes me on average less than 15 sec to boot from hibernation and about 25 sec to hibernate. Much better than cold booting, but nowhere near PDA speeds. Honestly, I find it faster to boot than to take the thing out of my bag and fiddle with the BT dongle.  :?

If TR2A can support LEAP, that would be a bonus for me because my office’s wireless LAN uses Cisco LEAP. However my home wireless gateway isn’t.  I am currently using Dlink 713P, will plan to get a USRobotics 802.11g wireless gateway in the near future. Some magazine review reports said 802.11g gateways’ performance will suffer if you want to set it up 802.11b compatible. This is too bad because I have an e740 PDA with 802.11b wifi. I certainly don’t want to compromise the 802.11g gateway performance.

15 sec’s to resume from hibernation is not that bad. I don’t mind it to take longer time to hibernate because you are not going use the machine anyway. Do you know if the boot/resume time is dependent on the number of applications running before the computer went to hibernation or not?

Perhaps someone with a TR2AP3 can tell us what chipset is located in their device. I’m sure one could get a clue from the Device Manager or using a program like SiSoftware’s SANDRA utility.

I suspect it’s an Atheros based chipset since that is the chipset used in their Wireless G PC Card.

TR2AP3 owners…help us out with this!  :wink:
