With my TR3AP3 I got just 1 cd..the useless AOL one. I was wondering if just like the AP1 owners got a separate cd of win xp home, shouldn’t the AP2 and AP3 owners get an individual cd of win xp pro too?
Technically, Sony doesn’t have to provide you with a standalone copy of Windows XP. You can blame Microsoft for that. Since Sony provides you with a copy pre-loaded and a means of creating your own restore CDs, they are following Microsoft’s guidelines for the distribution of the OS.

I recently received my TR3AP1 and it only came with the AOL CD. Thus, I created the 9+ CD-ROMs but as of yet, I have not deleted the 5GB partition.
A agree that it is frustrating having to create your own set, but then, thanks to pirating of Microsoft’s operating system, we have to live with it. Too bad I had not bought the TR3AP3 w/DVD burner.

dunno what to say…i got a separate cd of win xp home with my dell desktop but my roomie got none with his dell laptop. from the image at newegg, it is certain that sony also gives the cd with certain models, but not tr as confirmed by flashfox.

I sort of feel bad abt buying the TR3AP3. I would have been happier and richer by a $100-200 if I would have bought the TR3AP2 and a slim external dvd-writer. I have burnt just 4 dvd’s in the past 40 days that I have owned the TR. I could have very well burnt those with an external dvd writer. Another option would have been buy the TR3AP2 and install the dvd writer separately…there also the savings would have been abt $200 (but a lost warranty too!!).
Anyway’s thanks guys for the input…highly appreciated !!
I couldn’t remember, but after looking through my “stuff” I didn’t see any green booklet. The TR came with XP-Pro installed so it would have been a different booklet anyway (not XP-Home), but as I said I only found a quick start guide and I remember throwing the AOL disc away.
Mine had the green booklet. It was just a welcome to Win XP and setup dialog for people who know very little about computers. I threw it away, I think. In any event, it did not seem important to me. Certainly no XP cd… thats for sure. :|
thats kind of odd…my dell desktop came with the same kind of green booklet but it also incldued the home ed of win xp. also, y would microsoft mention “for distribution with a new pc only” on a flimsy booklet ?
well, ne ways, the main reason for this post was just incase i was the only person who didnt recv the win xp cd I could contact them and ask them for 1. After spending 2845 on this laptop I wanted nothing to be wrong or missing with it.
Can’t blame you there, Rahul. Seeing as how you have the XP Home Edition already, having two would be even handier, eh? I don’t know how many times I lent out my Win 98 cd before I got a burner and wondered who I lent it to.
Oh no, I wanted windows xp pro…because thats what i was entitled to get. And, as far as windows xp goes, the more the merrier…
any serial for windows xp needs to be activated and that can be done only on 1 machine. Once a serial # has been activated, it can NEVER be used on another machine. So, when u activate windows xp, microsoft also stores some machine specific info with it so that if u try to activate that same serial on some other machine microsoft will return some error. I guess if modify some hardware and are having problems activating the copy u could call up microsoft and sort it out.
ne ways, I have a few serial #‘s for windows xp with me..perfectly legal…got them from my friends at my univ. with the earlier OS like win98, 95 ME, etc there was nothing such as activation hence u could distribute ur serial # to howmany ever ppl and not worry, but with windows xp, thats all changed.
Rahul: You’re right, but I was trying to install XP PRo after letting a friend borrow it first, (stupid, I know,) on my TR3A after wiping the HD, and it locked up and wouldn’t let me install. However, after a quick two minute call to Microsoft, they gave me a new serial # and let me install on the laptop. Interesting, considering that my friend’s desktop and my TR3A are totally machine-different. Microsoft is really odd sometimes.

As I mentioned if u call up MS and talk with them, then things could be diff. but a serial # can be activated only once. Thats why as u have mentioned they gave u another serial #. I guess since they are MICROSOFT, they could have also increased the # of activations on that serial # to 2 (if at all thats possible).
