I have been getting Blue Screen of Death errors which have been driving me CRAZY! I couldnt figure out what was causing it. so i did some tests today to really try to pinpoint when the computer would crash and from what.
i found that if i go on my corporate vpn using the internal wifi card then sign off the vpn and try to use the t-mobile GPRS service right after that the computer flakes out and crashes and restarts.
i called t-mobile and they said that it is from the intel pro chipset and that sony would have a patch for it. they said i need the fast switching feature.
i know i have heard sony isnt that good with tech support. does it sound like t-mobile is telling me the truth? and if so where can i get this sort of patch?
well, i get them randomly, but have you ever had a computer running windows that didn’t?!? at first i thought it was something to do with usb, as i have so much sh**t dangling off those two poor little ports…ie. i got one once when plugging in a device, my sony coolpix, but then i got one when opening a web page, yes, ON THIS SITE! so i was getting ready to blame grooveythang, but i got one a few days later after, being in a hurry, and not wanting to shut down properly, i pressed and held the power button to quickly shut the machine down. next time i started her, she blue screened on that boot. but it’s been days now and no problems. so in short, about 4 bluescreens in the past month, with no logic that i can record. as they say here, ky garne (what to do, with a defeatest tone to it).
jig
oh, ps. i dont use wireless anymore and keep the switch off.
Oh sh**t!!!!! Another one!!!! Just after writing the last append about only getting 4 this month…so that’s 5! It’s getting worse. It’s all collapsing. And I kinda knew it would, someday. Here’s my theory…it’s this WEBSITE!!! Why would I have such a crazy theory…cause it’s true that you can design a web page that under the right circumstances and the “right†video driver, you can blow a machine out of the virtual puddle it sits in. How do I know this? It’s a well documented case in the World Bank IT department, that when I was the lead webmaster years ago, when we were using windows NT and some crappy dell machines that had a really flakey video card, that one of the web pages that I was responsible for putting together, it had a large jpg of President Wolfensohn, would cause those machines with a certain version of this dell video driver to REBOOT when the page was viewed. It is a well documented case because it caused a major headache: all the machines were locked down with the webpage on the image, and the networked image replacement scheme was non-functional for about a month. Everytime someone (and there were 5000 someones) would click on the webpage, and POW. I had done all my testing on my own laptop – a micron as I recall – so I had no idea there was a problem, or such a thing could ever occur, and when i found out, well, as you can see, years later I am living in bumf**k nepal selling dog biscuits on the internet.
So perhaps it has something to do with the video driver here, I really don’t have a clue. But if it continues, I will be certain that this is just my karma, and maybe yours too, and that I am destined to have blue screens of death for the rest of my life, which if I am lucky, will have a reboot option in the end that brings up a linux screen.
Sorry you’re having blue screen issues. I doubt it’s this site since it was built entirely on my TR1 and I haven’t had any blue screens while building it…and I hit the site harder than anybody else.
I suspect it’s something else on your system…possibly an errant driver for a 3rd party device you’re using? You may want to troubleshoot by stopping unnecessary services and removing certain items in your startup group. Boot clean and slowly add things back and see if you have anymore bluescreens.
Of course, it could simply be a corrupted system file as well or some hidden virus/trojan horse? One thing you can do is backup your entire system (using proggies like TrueImage/Ghost/DriveImage) and do a system restore so that you have a clean system to begin with. This will help you rule out a lot of variables. If it stops crashing then good…if it keeps crashing then it point to some sort of hardware issue like faulty RAM or something else.
Also, are there any messages in the EVENT LOG after each bluescreen? See what the last entry is in the system logs and it might give you an indication of what’s going on. You may need to go into the system properties to increase the size of the dump file. If the logs show anything then post it here and perhaps we can help you find the source of your problem.
If all else fails we can all pray for good cosmic karma to go your way..
okay, i’ll stop being silly and let’s rule out this site…it’s so strange…the event logs are perfectly clean! and i watch them all the time, i am so anal. and another strange thing…isn’t windows supposed to recover from a blue screen in the sense that that on next boot it prompts you with a message that goes something like this, and of course i paraphrase cause i don’t ever remember error messages: your computer had a really hard time, and now wants to know 1) can you please go shoot yourself, you stupid human or 2) would you like me to start the system using settings from a time and place where things were all heaven-like? or 3) please contact your system administrator (snicker, i know ya ain’t got one).
ran a complete scan with norton’s latest viral thingee. hell, i’m over it. life is suffering and then ya die, then ya are reborn, then more suffering, then ya die, repeat previous steps for a few eons…then ya become a buddha or an ant…so as Alfred E Neman says: what does he say again?
guess what! you guessed it i figured out what was crashing my system. i pinpointed it to something to do with my cisco vpn, wifi card and tmobile aircard software. i did a fresh install and started adding things back one by one like gr00vy suggested and this is what i found:
i added my cisco vpn….all was fine i addedd my tmobile aircard 750 software and all was fine. i then added sygate free firewall and BANG BANG BANG there it was it was SYGATE free firewall was yucking things up.
I AM SO HAPPY my system doesnt crash and restart it self anymore. but now i dont want to addd any software ever again.
:D wow rabbit, we i am so happy for you, and you can beta test my new software: Ware-no-more. It’s a small app that prevents ya from installing anymore software on a TR1; everytime ya try it pops up a bluescreenofdeath with a reminder on it: REMEMBER ME? DON’T DO IT.
seriously, maybe my problem is firewall related, as i have occassional crashes on bootup with armor2net firewall. But they are the normal well behaved wanna-send-a-useless-dump-to-microsoft-that-they-will-never-read kind. i’d uninstall it till i hear from tech support, but i am afraid. very afraid. this ip land is not one where ya wanna leave your pants down.
okay, after 15 minutes with a c++ compiler i’ve decided that programming is not for me, so the project has been discontinued till further notice, or i learn how to program (ha!). The Ware-No-More development team, me and my dog, recommend the following workaround:
1)first purchase an aftermarket full replacement warrenty before executing this procedure:
2)superglue the multi-drive bay door shut
3)place wads of chewing gum (bazooka only) over all access ports, ie. modem, firewire, nostrols, etc.
Note: this may void your Sony warrenty, but they could care less anyway.
so verizon has a new broadband gizmo? wow. so you put a card in, then you really have internet in say, all of DC? and ya pay what, 80$ a month?! is it like a huge national hotspot? i’m really sorry you are having trouble but really interested in finding out more, as i come to the states in the summers, and last one i spend in starbucks parking lots with my tr and t-mobile. i would drive to a city in the west, and search for starbucks. that kinda sucked cause i was so caffinated in two weeks i could hardly hold the steering wheel.
