[quote author=“KiDquiz”]mlouie,
could you tell me a little about your education background? i’m finishing up my electical engineer degree and possibly going to law school after to be a patent lawyer. i also wanted to know how you like the job? i’ve heard mixed reviews, so any feed back would help me and possibly save me from making a poor career move.
KiDquiz,
I have a mechanical engineering background. Patent Attorneys are very much in demand since you must have a technical background, thus eliminating 99% of the other attorneys. The two technical disciplines most in demand, at least here in the bay area, are electrical engineers and PHD’s in biotech.
I like it very much. You will find it less stressful than other fields of law, but competitive in salary due to demand. The work flow is pretty steady, even in bad economic times. We may typically be the first ones hired by a company and the last ones they let go. Even when a company goes under, they may set aside funds for intellectual property since that may be all they have of value to maintain.
I worked as an engineer for about 3 years, but much prefer being a patent attorney.
Thus, I think it would be a wise career move. I suppose if you don’t like it, you can always go back to engineering or another field of law. Even if you don’t practice law, a legal degree may be helpful in other fields. Tony LaRussa and Steve Young are attorneys.
