Yeah, I finally finished that darn review and have posted it. For gadget freaks like most Sony TR owners, the DSC-T1 is one of those Sony products that has serious wow factor as it’s a combination of great design, great specifications, and great execution. Of course, it goes well with a Sony TR because of the memory stick slot…although you need a little adapter which comes with it.

Despite a few minor weaknesses (basically the anemic flash), this is a great everyday camera that’s sure to take great pictures and impress your friends.

For owners of the DSC-T1, there is a new firmware update available for the camera.

It fixes two problems in some T1 cameras.

1. Fixes issue with deleting pictures during Quick Review function.

2. Files get damaged or corrupted when transferring via USB2 connection.

This update only applies to the DSC-T1 with a serial number within one of the following ranges -

1710001 - 1754760
1850001 - 1856700
1860001 - 1864950

NOTE: If you do not have any problems listed in the firmware update then don’t apply the update. If it’s not broken…don’t fix it.

It also happens to add PictBridge support for those that need it.

For import owners, there is a fix for those people too. The following serial number ranges are applicable.

Again, if your camera already has PictBridge support then you don’t nee this update.

I believe you can use the exact same download file as the US version. I downloaded both versions and they seem identical. However, I simply used the Japanese version just in case (since I have an import). You can leave your language settings alone and do the whole procedure in English.

MWave has the SanDisk version here .

Most other places have the SanDisk version for around $189 on average. Unless you really need the Sony part I would go with a SanDisk part (which also have a longer warranty).

I like Butterfly Photo. They have pretty good prices. I just ordered a Sony F828 digital camera from them which was $180 off the list price. It’s an awesome deal!

I just bought a T1 Japanese import in Bangkok, for about 280 pounds which I hope is cheap. I also got the underwater housing. My last camera was the P1, bought in 2001 which I took approx 7000 pics with. I had the underwater housing for this too, but on a recent diving trip I stupidly opened the case on a beach I’d swam to, took some pics but got some sand in the seal, and bham, my P1 got wet.

It did dry out and seems to work OK, apart from one problem - it wont accept any memory stick, shows error C13.

I needed an excuse to upgrade anyway, and this time I got a red filter for the underwater case aswell, last time I did without. I wonder what difference it will make?

The amazing thing is this time around, for a camera thats smaller, much quicker, better movies, higher res, twice as much memory (I need to find a 512 but 2 256’s were cheaper!), the whole lot (including underwater housing, 512 meg mem, case) cost less than the original P1 alone cost! (I hope there are no battery issues like with the P1, 4 new batteries in 3 years was expensive, and they only fixed mine a few months ago :cry:

All I need now is a spare battery (or two), but cannot find anywhere   :?:

:?:  I wish Sony had put a 320x240 @ 30fps movie option, that would be the ideal mix of quality v. mem use in my opinion. The 640x480 are awesome, but I’m afraid to use it for lack of memory! If a firmware upgrade could add this I’d be real happy.

Next thing to do is work out which is quicker for image download… putting the memory stick in an adaptor and inserting into T1 slot, or connecting the T1 to cradle and copying over USB 2 - any thoughts?

Final point - the screen, while recessed, seems easy to damage, I know my old P1 screen is scratched alot, and that seems to have a hard coating, whereas the T1 has no cover - anyone any ideas how to protect it? I have got the T1 case but it doubles the size of the camera!

Now I’m about to upgrade the Firmware - fingers crossed nothing breaks.

I flashed the firmware last night on my T1. Although it wasn’t one of the numbers in the serials posted above, it did update smoothly from version 1 to version 2.

I also finally got a chance to try a 512 MB Pro Duo (just arrived) in movie mode and I was really impressed by the quality of the 640x480 video! The downside is that it goes through memory pretty quickly! It only tried it for about 15-20 seconds and the file size was around 60 MB. It didn’t occur to me to just let it run through the whole stick. I’ll do that tonight and let you know approximately how much video you can get. I also wish there was a 320x240 option in ‘fine mode’ (or alternatively 4GB memory sticks!)

This weekend is the Sakura Matsuri. Hopefully if the weather is nice, I’ll have a chance to shoot some nice video and pictures.

I think the 512MB MS DUO probably can only hold 6-7 minutes at the best quality. My 256MB MS DUO shows 3:01 on an empty card. In my tests it is around there plus or minus a few seconds.
