I like to use my laptop around the house, but far too often they get too hot and overheat - how do users of the TR series find them as I’m on the verge of buying one for a whole host of other reasons.

mine gets warm.  but not hot.  the machine is a dream.  i literally ask myself everday if i am dreaming.

did i mention the screen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Generally speaking, it doesn’t get hot unless you block the vents. So, if your using your TR while its on a fairly high carpet then it could get warmer than normal but it’s nothing too worry about.

Anyone have any experience using wireless specifically? As an experiment I’ve been using my laptop with a very long ethernet cable rather than the PCMCIA card and it seems a lot better. I assumed built in WiFi on the Centrino units would be better, but I don’t know why I would think that!

what a segway! pile carpet to long ethernet cables i dont know much about it, but i do know that the speed of a 1394 connection (the ethernet thingee) is 400mbps, (and i don’t know what an mbps is, nor care too), the built in wireless on the tr1 is…someone help me here, less than 50 yes?  so when home networking it may come to a choice between long wires or slower connections.  when i had a house years ago with a SOHO network, i sure wish wireless existed, cause it was ugly, all that cable hammered around doors and stuffed along the baseboards. :wink: I would have given up speed for design. but nowadays i think people in the west are even networking movies and music to home stereos, so speed might be important in that application.  good luck!

My TR2 gets pretty warm around the left wrist rest area, mainly because of the hard drive and processor in the vicinity. The fan does a good job of keeping the machine cool and I’ve actually never heard it working, just felt the hot air coming out of the vent.

If you’re running on battery power, the fan hardly comes on and the machine stays cool. On AC, just make sure the vents aren’t blocked. Overall, the TR is much cooler than my previous machine, a PowerBook G4 that was scorching hot whenver doing anything processor-intensive.

this is by far the coolest machine i have ever used…my sony clie gets hotter than this potato

ps, anyone want to buy a sony peg-t665c/g with 128mb memory pro stick & sony folding keyboard? comes with doc, extra portable charger…  probally not.  why would you?

I’m still using my SRX99 and haven’t converted over to a TR yet. A question I have is where are the vents in the TR series? My SRX sucks up air from the bottom of the case and blows it out the side. Computers with a battery mounted on the back take away this traditional vent location.

There is a problem if you put the SRX on a surface that isn’t rigid, for the intake will be blocked. My solution is to place my SRX on top of the semi hard Vaio case when I’m using it on my lap. This also makes a good barrier from body heat. Still, I wish the intake were someplace else.

Looking at the TR I can only see one side vent port. The bottom has some sort of grill that I don’t think is near the fan. Could someone please explain the ventilation system on the TR, and do you need to keep the bottom of the case free for air to circulate?

Glad to know it is a cool running unit if you don’t block the vents, but I still would like to know where the intake vent is located on the TR series that shouldn’t be blocked.

The vent is on the bottom in the middle. (doesn’t get blocked easily when in lap)

I had this vent completely covered for months wich no change in heat while running at 600mhz. I would think at 900Mhz it might be useful but the vent is not near the fan.

the fan itself is like a micro-fan and probably can get enough air whithout the bottom vent.(guessing)

However, the vent is right below the memory. The memory on these centrino machines I think can get sort of warm (according to my numerous temp gauges on my Dell centrino laptop) -not at all sure about any of this so YMMV.
