I don’t know if it’s going to take two years but I know it’s not going to show up in low profile notebook designs for a while. We barely have decent drive choices for notebooks. Everything is at 2x speed at the best. If we’re lucky then we can get 4x to 8x DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW in our TRs.
In terms of what you should do…it depends on what you need and what’s available at the time. If you don’t have a real need then perhaps you can wait. Also, it depends on what you’re going to use it for…data backup? making movies? both? What kinds of capacities do you need? You can already fit 2 hours on current DVD-R (albeit not the highest quality).
Also, it’s possible that by the time dual-layer format disc and drives come out and are affordable that the next-gen blue ray technology might be out. This will increase capacity 3 to 4 fold over dual layer discs.
