Microsoft’s release of Windows 7 this week does not install exactly the same way as Windows 7RC did.  In fact, it is easier.  The driver updates are completely automated once you establish an internet connection (which needs to be by cable because wireless will not work until you get the updates).

I will update the instructions above for out-of-the-box Windows 7 when I get a few minutes.

Does anyone know where I can obtain the HotKey utilities install for the TR1A?  I found one in the TR3 section on sony’s website, but when I tried to run it, it complained “This update is not intended for use with your computer model”.

Hello battousai.  Sorry that I cannot answer your question, but I do have a comment. 

I’m not so sure that the Hotkeys utility for any of the TR models will work with the official released version of Windows 7.  It worked so well in Windows 7RC, but I’ve tried almost everything I know to get it to work on the TR3A.  No success.

Everything else works great.  I will be a happy Windows 7 user on my TR for a long time, but I must now use the touchpad to adjust the volume.  I will miss the volume buttons.  Also, I’m trying to find another way to adjust display brightness.  No luck yet.

As a replacement to Hotkeys volume controls, I found a Freeware program called “3RVX” that allows you to create your own shortkeys for volume control and mute.  It works well.  Download it at http://matt.malensek.net/#/Software/

I added several notes in orange to the Windows 7 installation instructions earlier in this thread pertaining to the boxed version of Windows 7.

how’s the TR performance on a XP SP3 vs Windows 7? Is it worth to upgrade the OS on a 5 years old HW?

Windows 7 runs outstanding on the TR.  The power management improvements make for faster boot ups and fast waking up from sleep. 

IE8 and Office 2007 take a long time to open in XP.  In Windows 7, it is very fast, even with the slow Hitachi 1.8 40GB HD.  Even faster with a SSD.

Memory usage is low too.  On my machine, anywhere from 480MB to 580MB.

You will notice speed improvement over XP.

Earlier this year, I considered buying a TT Series.  But upgrading the TR was much less expensive, and the end result is perfect for what I do.

but i like to have all hot keys working…. i can work with not accessing the lcd keys, but how about the keyboards? are all keyboards keys functional?

Sony Hotkeys do not work, but there is a work-around to get the keys working for volume, mute and standby (or hibernate).  That is covered in the installation text above.

All other keys work fine.  No keyboard problems.

I’ve been very happy with the performance of Windows 7 on my TR3A.  Because I do not miss being able to control the screen brightness, I’ve done no further work to try and fix it.  I still think there is a way to get all of the hotkeys to work, but I haven’t had the time to mess with it.  They all worked great in Windows 7RC.

I do not miss Aero Themes transparency on the TR (but they are impressive on my other computer).  But desktop Gadgets work fine on the TR.

Anyone know how to install these two. there is no exe file and one of the 4 files in the folder has a right click option to install but it says it’s the wrong file type to do this..
