I don’t mind using the built in mouse when I am portable, but at home I like the feel of a real mouse. I decided to try Sony’s PCGA-WMS5 instead of my usual Logitech mice.
The Sony mouse cost about $60. The kit inludes the mouse, the receiver, 2 sets of USB cables {one short and one long}, and 2 AA batteries.
I had originally expected the mouse to be much smaller then it actually is…to me this is a desktop type mouse, not one for a notebook. To give you an idea, here is the mouse next to my Logitech Cordless Trackman Wheel:
To add the batteries, the cover of the mouse slides off and exposes 2 AA battery slots:
The reason sony includes 2 sized USB cables is that they give you a smaller one for use with notebooks and a larger one for use with desktops. The one in the picture next to the TR is the smaller one:
I used it for a little bit. It seems to glide smoothly over my wood desk with no skips or hiccups. I moved the receiver around a bit and even turned it the other way but the mouse kept signal fine. The clicking is a bit loud and the mouse wheel is square-edged if you can understand that, so it’s a bit weird at first.
As I said before I had expected it to be a bit smaller. Before buying the Sony I picked up a Logitech Cordless Optical Mouse for Laptops. Below you will see the size difference between the two:
As you can see the Logitech is smaller and the receiver is smaller as well. The Logitech one cost me about $40 which is $20 less then I paid for the Sony.
Overall the Sony mouse does it’s job, I had hoped it would be a bit smaller and the wheel being very squared is a bit weird but I guess I can live with it. I like how the mouse matches the TR and it’s worth the extra money and slight discomfort for it.
