Anyone think there is a possibility some of the companies that carry the 802.11A/B/G cards for our TRs will produce/locate a card that will have 802.11N?
Thank you for the link Josh. I read it and agree with you. I also don’t know if it is in draft status, BUT what made me ask this question was my recent trip to Frys.
Linksys (Cisco’s retail products) already has 802.11N products for sale. That is why I was assuming it was already ready and in use. Maybe not available yet at saturation levels, but in use?
I suspect you’ll be able to get Intel’s 802.11n solution in a few weeks and upgrade your TR much like how you could upgrade from 2100 to 2200, 2945 and 3945 wireless chipsets.
Intel’s part is also always ridiculously cheap so it may be worth waiting for.
I am finding that the “N” cards being made so far are about half the size of the ones in the TR. There is even one available on the Dell website. Hopefully they will include the size we need when they make these available.
Bringing this back alive. Seems we may have a solution now. According to Craig at Discount Technology, their card supports N. “You’ll need a laptop with at least two antennas. It handles up to three antennas.”
802.11N is backwards compatible with B/G Also, look for MiniPCI, NOT Express (aka PCI-E). Post what you guys can find!
OK guys, I have taken the plunge to buy an 802.11N card. After watching Discount Technology raise their price from $99 to $119, I was going to wait for awhile for the price to come down.
It has been many months as you can see and the price is still high. So I did a search on Ebay and found the “purple” card below and bought it for $45 shipped I will let you all know if it works when I install it.
I have this card now and will install it as soon as I get my SSD drive I just won on Ebay. But in the meantime, I am curious as to which 2 of the 3 connector circles I am supposed to attach the two cables to. There were no instructions, only the driver software. Anyone have any ideas?
So to answer my own question, I am going to need a third antenna cable (anyone have one they want to sell?). From what I have read, since there is not a third connector on the motherboard, the antenna will be connected to the card and the other end of the cable is to left unattached, of course covering the end of it with electrical tape is recommended.

No progress yet. I was planning on looking around for a third cable after next week as this is the piece that is holding up the progress. Installing the card and cable will be the easy part.
Forgive me for lack of knowledge. Don’t all wireless cards with B/G/N require 3 antennas? Maybe I read wrong and if I did, that is cool! lol.
How did you figure one of the connectors is for blue tooth? I looked all over the card, tried to search for specifics to see if there was any indication as to what the 3 connectors were classified as. I really haven’t been able to find much about the card I bought.
No usually just a main and aux antenna but not sure about N cards, don’t have any knowledge of them, and maybe thought about bluetooth as a lot of the wireless cards have bluetooth and wireless combo, but just a theory, can’t really think of anything else.
OK guys, bad news. The card I bought is a bit too long in length to fit into the TR case. This would make the card from Discount Technology a bit too long as well looking at how it is exactly the same style as the purple one I bought. So now I have a worthless card and no N capability.
Oh well, I am not going to pursue this anymore as my guess is, I will be without this laptop in another year or so. N isn’t really public in way of cafes and such yet anyway. Good luck to you all on this upgrade
