It looks like CF will be our only hope. SSD has stopped production of 50pin ide pata at 32gb capacity (samsung) - no competitors i can see have followed with a 64gb version.
However, Compact flash is moving quickly. I’m looking at a delkin UDMA PCMCIA flash reader that can handle throughput of 45mb/s software will allow a CF card to be recognized as a removable disk. My next upgrade will be a 32gb CF card inside of one of these UDMA pcmcia flash readers throughput will be 42-45mb/s
In comparison the performance will be better than our OEM Toshiba drives, however performance will lag slightly behind the SSD.
When searching for a CF card make sure you get UDMA, and make sure it is SLC. And make sure you check the read and WRITE rates, since the write rates are often much slower
that company I linked to above has a CF Card-IDE adapter… Others have used this to replace their Laptop HDD’s, I haven’t read of anyone doing it with a vaio yet, any takers? it would be a much cheaper experiment than say the ssd adapter I have up there.
If no one attempts this, I will try to attempt it in about a month. after I save up around $200 needed to buy the CF card/adapter. (if it fails, i’ll just use the cf card in my pcmcia slot anyways =)
