In case anyone is curious, I upgraded the hard drive on a Sony SZ370. The machine was running Vista, and the surgery went off without a hitch. I posted full instructions on my blog:

Nice job Rob! I am sure there will be a few folks happy to find your experience so well outlined. I think I have a service manual available for VAIO SZ as well, it has some nice schematics on upgrading/replacing stuff. If you need one, let me know.
