I have been debating on buying this hard drive since it has more availability than the Samsung AND it is much cheaper.

Any thoughts on this drive? I am thinking it should work just fine.

You can’t use the pictured version because it is ZIF and you need 50 pin (Toshiba) ide (see the detail in the ssd thread), If they do a 50 pin version then yes (I didn’t have time to read the blurb), or you may be able to find a zif to TR mainboard connector.. we have look into this in the past when it was thought all ssd hdds were going to be zif so I’m sure it’s possible..

However.. I know they are difficult to get, and still stupidly expensive but Samsung ssd is really the way to go for hassle free ssd upgrade to TR series

Yea, after I posted this, I noticed the picture had a zif connector. I have seen them with the regular connector.

But I have to agree. The Samsung is a much better way to go. I have seen the Sandisk for $329.99. I am happy to pay $399.99 for the Samsung, but I just have to find one. New Egg is still at $499.99

I will take your advice BladeRunner and wait until I find a Samsung.

I can’t believe Newegg jumped the price up. You can have it notify you when it goes below a certain point, that’s what I did.

I think it’s basic supply and demand, since most compact new laptops are coming with an ssd or at least an ssd option along with the atermarket segment such as ourselves have tried and found it to be a very good upgrade for older small notebooks they just can’t fill the global demand. I want another 32gb but at current prices it will wait..

I have seen many other SSDs that were 2.5” form factor for $225 and have seen 64GB 2.5” for about $899. But man, it seems the Samsung is the most demanded SSD of them all. Samsung does make good stuff.

On a different note, my mom bought our very first VCR in 1984 from Samsung lol.

Here’s another reason to avoid everything that’s not Samsung for the time being until someone that has both and can back to back compare, we know the Samsung 16gb & 32gb 1.8” SDD fit’s and works out of the box, plug & play if you have a Toshibia HDD…. but read the newegg comments section about this “cheaper” 2.5” ssd..

I had a quick search about and can’t find any 16gb or 32gb anywhere, even silly priced places have no stock

Wow! I never read any of the reviews on those brand drives because I never really considered them - just Samsung and SanDisk.

Samsung is king and probably will be for a long time with SSD.

Ritek to unleash 16GB and 32GB Flash SSD drives in Q2

Samsung has really been on the ball with the advancement of Flash Solid-State Disk (Flash SSD) drives. SanDisk recently decided to throw its hat into the ring, too. Not to be left out, Ritek has decided to join the party as well.

The company announced that it will deliver RiDATA branded SSDs with capacities of 16GB and 32GB in Q2 2007. The drives will be available in 1.8” and 2.5” form-factors with ATA and IDE interfaces.

Ritek also stated that it will be looking to OEMs and channel customers for distribution of its SSDs. SanDisk, on the other hand, is looking to limit distribution of its drives to notebook OEMs.

Ritek has confirmed Samsung will likely be the primary manufacturer for its solid-state drive. If Samsung does indeed provide the memory chips, it would likely be the new 50 nanometer multi-level cell (MLC) chips with vastly improved read/write performance.

As for pricing, Riteks’s new drives will be ultra competitive with existing solutions. The 16GB version will have an MSRP of $265 USD for the 1.8” version and $270 USD for the 2.5” version. Pricing for the 32GB version was not released, but it likely will easily undercut the $600 premium commanded by the 32GB SanDisk SSD Ultra ATA 5000.

A 64GB version of the drive is also due to be released later this year. We will bring you more information as soon as it is available.
