i know that i may be so late…
but i’m still lucky and grateful to have a TR!

i just received a TR1 (japanese version) from a japanese friend a week ago…
it was almost brand new since he used it for just a month last 2003.
so, the look and software were still in stock form.

though i knew a little Japanese, it’s still hard for me to manipulate
everything since OS is in Japanese.
but after a week of sleepless nights, and of course with the help of this
board (which the only board that helped me a lot), i finally configured the
bluetooth setting/configuration with the Bluetooth Stack by Toshiba.

i can now connect my bluetooth headset not only for listening to audio files
but also, to use it for voice calls for skype and YM.
i can’t really believed that i’ve done it since i can’t read all of those
Japanese.
with the help of “trial and error” method, i was able to set the proper
setting and configuration.

now, i hope that i can proceed to my next projects…
hard disk upgrade, memory upgrade and probably DVD-R upgrade…
i hope i can still find some parts here in japan…

You can of course use a standard windows XP to get a English or other language OS in the TR but it’s better to use the Sony restore discs because it includes all the additions to make the TR’s functions work.. You can add these too be it’s easier to use the restore discs.

The problem is the bios on TR series has to match the install discs region or it aborts the install. what you can do however is install it on a English version for example.

So if i used your HDD and installed a UK TR1 XP install on it in a UK TR1mp it will install fine I could then put the HDD in your Japanese spec TR1 and it would work fine (may have to add specific wireless & Bluetooth drivers if these are different on Japanese spec)....

thanks for the information.
but i got a little confusion…

what do you mean by i have to use the Sony restore discs?
do you mean i have to use that after installing an English XP?
will there be no problem or confusion with the system if I use an English XP and the original
restore discs?

please correct me if i’m wrong with these:
1. clear or erase my original Japanese OS.
2. install the English XP
3, use the original restore discs to install the drivers

is that right?

or is there a link here that would tell me the steps in order to change my OS from japanese
to english?

Sorry I’ll try to make it clearer

basically you have three choices if you want XP

1. Install the original o/s that came with the TR from the Restore discs if you have them which I’m guessing is Japanese

2. Buy or use a normal English Windows XP home or Pro and install the drivers.

3. Put the HDD or a new HDD if you want to upgrade it, into any English language region TR1, (TR1mp uk English version for instance). Install using restore discs for TR1mp which gives pro version and all drivers, shared libraries etc so all the FN functions work etc. Then take the drive out and put it in your Japanese version.

The point I was making is, I could send you TR1mp restore discs but they will not work in your TR1 because the bios is region specific, (it will see yours is Japanese and abort the install). However other than the bios (and keyboard in your case) the TR1’s are both the same so a TR1mp install will work in your TR1 once it is installed, (at least this has worked with US and International versions I’ve tried it with so far)

I actually partitioned the disk and used the recovery disk after partitioning to reinstall the japanese os so the disk looks like this:
?: (hidden recovery partition, you can delete this but I didn’t)
C: Japanese os xp home, installed automatically by the recovery disk
D: English os xp pro, installed manually
E: Data partition so that I can stuff around with the os partitions and leave my data intact.

Then use dual boot between C and D.

Find someone that has a English TR version (I was using TR1mp as an example there are US & international ones also) as long as they have a restore disc set that matches their English language TR all that needs to be done is put in your hdd (a larger one if you are upgrading) and install the os

Note there are two types of HDD so you’d need to know which, check your bios.. (hopefully that’s not in japaneese). You can do it like the suggestion you found, but it’s messy and uses additional HDD space for no good reason.

If you want it as I’ve outline get a new HDD (must be same type as you currently have) Hitachi or Toshiba (or SSD Samsung)... send it to me in the UK I’ll put the install on it and send it back all it will cost you is the postage / packaging both ways..

I’ll try to start looking for the English TR or probably try to look for a suitable HDD first.
Speaking of hdd, you’ve mentioned that there are 2 types of HDD for TRs. the Hitachi and Toshiba.
Please let me know if my understanding is correct.
If my hdd is Hitachi, i can only use the more capacity HDD of Hitachi only.
And if my hdd is Toshiba, i can only use the more capacity HDD of Toshiba only.
UNLESS I have those brackets, rubbers and connector as you’ve mentioned in the other thread
in order to replace Toshiba by a Hitachi HDD, right?
And If I would like to upgrade to Samsung SSD, there should be no problem if I have a Toshiba
HDD. And if ever I have the Hitachi, I need to have those brackets, rubbers and connector again.
I hope that my understanding is correct.
