This unit is just as impressive as I thought it would be.

There is one issue however: the hd makes an annoying high-pitch whirring noise as it spins. I can hear it on top of my regular laptop fan/hd when they are sitting together. Is this normal?

I am thinking about a HD upgrade in any case. Are other drives less noisy, or is this sound due to the case construction?

Also as anyone else done the solid-state drive swap other than the one guy who posted about it? That is a very appealing alternative, though probably prohibitively expensive…

didn’t notice any strange noise. Your hd might be slightly old. Defragment it to limit its access and remove the swap file.

It’s a 1.8 hd, normally you don’t hear it, unless, like the good ol’ TR, when the head of the hd park itself.

Congratulations for your purchase, did you take one from DirectFromJapan ?

Yes I bought it from DirectFromJapan. For now, I would warn others about purchasing from them though. They did not ship the battery or the wireless card, which were clearly included in the product description. I am working to resolve this and will post an update.

I have just ordered a new 30GB drive (Toshiba MK3006GAL). Hopefully I’ll be able to install it ok…

Ya, the guy lo-loc from DirectFromJapan and now add DirectFromUS or somethings. He ship a broken X505 to me, I shipped it back to exchange/repair but wait for another 3 months to get it. Nothing comes with the laptop either, only the laptop itself.
