Follow the pictures and you shouldn’t have a problem. Just work slowly and don’t tug on anything if you meet resistance. The photos are a general walk through - following them backwards will help you re-assemble.

Hi, I was just wondering what the read / write specs are of this drive? Is it a 2x DVD-RW or DVD+ ???

It’s 2x DVD-R/W. No DVD+R/W. Sony’s external firewire drive is 2x DVD+R/W and only 1x DVD-R/W.

Emi ^_^ .  I wanted to check out your link but it was not working.  I am not sure if it is my system, but you might want to check it out.

Sorry - my friend’s website is usually pretty good. Sometimes his connection goes down though (not his fault) - if it’s not available just try again later. As of this post I can access it without a problem.

Dude, you’re killing your buddy’s connection. I’ve got a 30MB FDDI into my office and that took a couple of minutes to load.

Sweet, mine arrived just now! Ugh, yet another opening of the TR…I think I’ve must have opened up my TR like 15 times already. It was scary the first time but now I’m doing it like it’s one of my desktop systems.

As usual, I will document my upgrade although Emi gets massive props for trying the upgrade and providing us with great pictures of the process. 

I’m sorta sad now…after this upgrade, there’s nothing else to upgrade…  :wink:

Thanks for the pictures and steps emi. It’ll come in handy when my drive gets here. I’m loving the TR, it’s all tricked out now and I’m just waiting on Toshiba or Hitachi to release a bigger and faster internal hard drive.

Ok, I just finished the installation. It’s recognized and seems to be working. I’m going to try to burn something just to make sure.

Yikes! You do need to apply a bit of force to get the middle clip of the front bezel to get it off. I was scared because the plastic was bending. It came off without bending or breaking but it was a bit uncomfortable.

Be sure to take care when doing that step. Everything else is pretty easy and straightforward.

when are you going to post the instruction?  also, how much do you pay for the drive?

Emi ^_^ .  Great pictures.  They will come in handy when my BT parts arrive.  I am saving them as a permanent source for TR disassembly.  I did the same thing with gr00vy0ne’s BT description.  I now have a lot more confidence to open up the TR.  Your macro shots were extremely valuable.  Thank you.

how long will it take to write full dvd disc with the speed at 2x.? have anyone tried?  :|

It’s around 30 minutes or so plus or minus a few minutes depending on the type of data and prep time. I just burned a 4.2GB ISO to DVD-R and it took roughly half an hour. That’s about right compared to my other DVD burners.

When i ordered my DVD drive it was in stock…i paid $23 for overnight shipping…it still isn’t here. I called Sony, its backordered. I told them I wanted just regular shipping and they said it wasn’t possible…they will ship it overnight and refund the difference back…how dumb is that?

ETA for shipping is the 20th-30th.
