Ok so they are not exactly giving it away but $232.99 is the cheapest I’ve seen yet… unless you know otherwise??. almost tempted to have 2gb in my ssd TR to see if vista is truly useable..

Thanks for that MrB you saved me because I was toying with the $232 price but it was still really hurting . However $159 is acceptable so I’ve ordered 2, but Memory 10 are daft beacsue it’s still $299 on their site

Ram arrived, took ages to get here.. nothing to do with Memory-x, (Memory Ten), all to do with the money grabbing UK customs bandits, not only do they fleece you, but think nothing of delaying your shipment for almost a month!!

Anyhow as expected for XP it makes little noticable difference, this is with SSD… will see if it helps Vista soon have a 32gb SSD coming after xmas.

Ram is not swissbit but Samsung.. no bad thing imo samsung make some of the best ram..

Vista will probably justify your RAM purchase.  1GB is XP feels fine to me.

Well it officially makes an SSD HDD the most effective performance upgrade for TR, I had surmised as much before but can now confirm it.

Personally I’m not to keen to jump to Vista, quite happy with XP, but I know sooner or later MS will push us on to having to use it because certain things either wont work, or wont work right with XP.

If TR can be made usable with Vista, (ok so it will never be fast, but that’s a given because of what it is), I’d say it has a good 5 to 8 years service in it.. at least for my use as a “basic” mobile PC

Think I also got that ram cheap, looks as if the $159 might have been an error because they are selling it at $299 again.. same as web site now.

Thanks for taking the time to research and post about upgrading the TR with an SSD hard drive and extra memory. I am also in the UK and as a direct result I have sourced and ordered both the 32Gb Samsung SSD (50 pin 1.8”) to replace the Toshiba in my TR2 as well as two sticks of 1Gb RAM. It should all arrive after xmas or in the new year. It’s a pity I couldn’t find a 64Gb SSD drive that is compatible.

I plan to reformat with Vista rather than XP and am really looking forward to the increase in overall performance.

I purchased two of the 1Gb memory modules linked in this thread (here is the product link from the order confirmation email). Unfortunately with either inserted the laptop will not boot up. I’ve tried inserting one plus the original 512Mb module but the screen is still blank. I have had to resort back to the original module. My laptop is a Sony TR2MP. The model underneath the base is PCG-4A1M.

The two memory modules received have 1Gb-MB-27 10-16-97 on a label covering a label underneath which has a “1” and a “PC-” showing but I cannot read the rest without trying to remove the top label. That label also has Warranty Void if Removed on.

Any ideas what’s wrong?

I can’t say why, maybe the memory you have just isn’t compatible.. no reason why it shouldn’t be though, specs are ok. Both mine work fine in Tr1mp & Tr5mp I do have a Tr2mp too that I haven’t yet tried it in so will tomorrow, can’t see why it wouldn’t but it does have a different bios so… can you return it as incompatible??

In my limited Vista testing so far it’s looking like the ram makes little difference to booting. I can only make a loose educated guess but so far SSD alone halves the boot to use time (use time is when continued hdd access stops).. I.5gb is iro 2 seconds faster 1.0gb 5 to 8 seconds slower than 2gb… so either the system can’t use the extra ram or it is simply CPU / bus limited and beyond the additional performance gained with SSD….. everything is waiting around for the CPU to get the job done…

The Vista home I have (as it came installed on a TR5mp) has a lot of stuff loading up, clock graphic, news links, my city temperature location, cpu % use graphic, office / Photoshop so I guess it can be skimmed down a lot to make it quicker. With 32gb SSD & 1.5gb it’s near enough 3 mins to fully booted with no hdd access, compared to over 6.30 with stock HDD same ram amount.

Hi. Did you manage to try the RAM in your TR2MP? I plan to return mine, since it does not appear to be compatible, and have now purchased 512Mb elsewhere. My TR2 now has 1Gb in it and a 1.8” SSD. Hopefully that will be fine *IF* I can get all the keys on the keyboard working again! I’ve made another post about it here.

yes sorry mine worked fine in TR2mp, so I guess yours must be faulty or incompatible. so far it looks like the CPU speed is the main bottleneck with TR in Vista 1.5gb giving marginally the best performance, oddly slightly better than 2gb and 1gb not far behind. this is just general performance there might be some apps that work better with 2gb.. but no getting away from it SSD roughly halves the boot to use time of Vista on TR in my experience so far, compared to standard Toshibia HDD on same TR5mp with same Vista ghosted to it..

Thanks. I will return the memory on Friday and stick with 1Gb. I have no idea what the problem is but I am done with it.
