I’ve got 2 x 1gb ram modules coming from USA, so I will test out if Vista is a realistic possibility with 2gb and SSD soon. I have Vista home on a normal Toshiba HDD.. don’t have any install discs, but I will ghost it to ssd and compare.

I think you’ll love SSD when you get it, the speed and silence are worth their weight in gold alone.

ps Now that you have 2gig SSD vaio can you get your lazy arse back to finishing the cpu cooler :p

pps I have a custom linux install on my vaio that flys but am crippled by the tosh disk and ram :|. Any help on sourcing the SSD and a 1gig microdimm would be a great help.

Yes I had already read those threads - pity about the performance with 2gbs but tough luck windoze users.

I’m hoping to pick up a 1gig stick for $200 and pay the excise. WTH is going on with the SSDs ? The price seems to be rising daily…. 420 yesterday, 430 today !

I too saw the Samsung posting on the 64GB SSD unit.  Arn’t we all bigger-is-better creatures hereabouts.  The way I read it though was that the 64GB unit was SATA only.  Anybody know if there is an IDE model or about fitting that SATA into a TR?  Also I see that there is a Samsung 120GB HDD in the 1.8 inch size; has anyone any experience with that?

I received and installed the 32GB SSD. I’m verry happy with the results. Windows boot’s 4 times faster than with my old hitachi harddisk. Diskbench gives the following results: Hitachi: 16MB/s SSD: 45MB/s. The machine is a lot faster with disk intensive applications. The battery runtime is about 30 min longer and the machine is quiet and cooler than before.

With the help of a Dremel I could reuse the bracket for the Hitachi. There is plenty of room for the drive in the tr1mp. Check the pictures for size.

Tip: I bought an external 1’8 inch case for the hitachi on the net for about 15,- US$ and put the old hitachi drive in it for an extra portable 30GB of space. Small butt slow.

Samsung Offers SATA II Solid State Drive in Volume Production

SEOUL, South Korea—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd, leader in advanced semiconductor technology, announced today that it has begun mass producing 64 GB solid state drives (SSDs) with its new SATA II interface, offering the highest performance rates in the industry for premium notebook PCs.

Able to read data at 100 megabytes per second and write it at 80 megabytes per second, Samsung’s SATA II SSD is up to 60 percent faster than SATA I drives and performs two to five times faster than conventional hard disk drives (HDDs). It also consumes nearly 75 percent less power than typical HDDs (1.45 watts compared to 2.1 watts) and at 73 grams, SSDs are much lighter than HDDs.

“While there will always be a market for HDDs, we see growing demand for our new SSDs, especially now that they are available with the SATA II interface,” said Jim Elliott, director, flash marketing, Samsung Semiconductor. “SSD technology is especially viable for the business and high-end consumer notebook markets because of its outstanding performance, as well as the added value gained from virtually no downtime and faster operating speeds.”

Extremely reliable, the SATA II SSD is comprised primarily of single-level-cell NAND flash memory, has no moving parts, is noise-free, produces very little heat and is much less susceptible to the shocks and vibrations that can be challenging to traditional disk drives. The new SATA II SSD can resist up to 1500 Gs of shock in a half millisecond compared to a shock resistance rating of 300 Gs in 2 milliseconds for a typical HDD.

Samsung said its 64 GB SATA II SSD, which began shipping earlier this month, will be available as an option within the next few weeks in select Dell and Alienware notebooks.

Now, it appears that these drives are almost impossible to find these days. I fancy the idea of an SSD, but they’re still pretty pricey at the moment so am happy to plump for a normal drive for the time being, HOWEVER, i’d prefer to use a Toshiba drive (they’re a bit easier to find) so that I can swap out to a SSD in the future.

Does anyone have any idea where I can get one of these Toshiba cradles from, including the required ribbon cable and what not - for me in the UK?

hmmm im not sure. I thought ZIF was a newer thing which the TR doesnt have, but then it says ribbon style IDE - so I dont know. I’m thinking it probably doesnt.

Bladerunner, do you reckon one of these could be used to then run a compact flash card as a hard-drive? Seems to be the right fittings. Might work out a fair bit cheaper than buying an SSD. Quite annoying if it would work though as i’ve just ordered a Toshiba drive mounting kit
