So you want to update your graphics driver but the one you downloaded from the Intel website disables the “Zoom” functionality, well this is for you! =O You can update your driver and still keep the “Zoom” function intact.
I’ve searched high and low for a solution to update the drivers for YEARS and finally found the solution through some research of my own.
I’ve tested this on a PCG-TR3A, I’m pretty sure it’ll also work with the TR2/TR5AP series. Keep in mind that the drivers aren’t the absolute latest but it was the latest one I found that kept the “Zoom” function intact. If anyone can find a driver with a later build I will update this post.
Uninstall your current Intel reference drivers before proceeding with this tutorial.
[1] Here’s what you need:
(A) Filename: INDVID-00500811-US.EXE Version: 6.14.10.3722
Link: ftp://download.sony.com/US/pc/INDVID-00500811-US.EXE
note: The driver above is from a VGN-U750P. I figured it would work because it has the same 855GM chipset with “Zoom”. Why Sony didn’t port these drivers over to the TR-series is beyond me.
The original TR driver version is 6.13.01.3485
(B) UniExtract Installer
Link: http://uniextract.c1pher.com/uniextract15.exe
note: You need this because the driver does a model check, if it does not match the one it was intended for it will abort the installation.
For the purposes of this tutorial save all the files at C:\ to keep things simple.
[2] Install the UniExtract program
[3] Right-click on the INDVID-00500811-US.EXE that you saved at C:\ and select UniExtract Here and then select Run, give it a few minutes while it extracts.
[4] Select the first option on the Extract Method “E_Wise Unpacker” and select OK, a command line dialog should pop-up, give it a few seconds.
[5] Go to Start > Run > and type down “sysdm.cpl” (without qoutes) and select OK then go to the Hardware tab and select Device Manager.
[6] Drop down the [+] Display adapters and select the first entry that says “Intel(R) 82852/82855 GM/GME Graphics Controller, right-click on that and select Update Driver…
[7] Select No, not this time on the Hardware Update Wizard dialog box and click Next
[8] Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced) and click Next.
[9] Select Search for the best driver in these locations and put a check on Include this location in the search and click on Browse.
[10] Navigate to [-] My Computer > [-] Local Disk (C: ) > [-] TEMP and select Drivers and then press OK and then Next >
[11] Windows will install the files to their respected folders and should ask you to restart at the end of the installation. After reboot the driver should be updated by now and the “Zoom” button will work. You can delete the files that were used and placed at C:\ if you choose to do so.
Enjoy. =D
