Although I think the model doesn’t really matter (TR1-TR2-TR3), but need to know how hot your HD can get.

To measure the temperature, just download HDtune and run the application.

My TR2A HD (Toshiba MK4004GAH) runs to low 60 C, which is very hot.  I just want to know how’s everyone here. Or is mine the only one that is running very hot?

My MK4004GAH was as hot as yours. so, don’t worry. MK4006GAH is not that hot, Average of 48-50°C.

I read that you can only replace Toshiba with Toshiba HD due to different interface, is that right?

Secondly, what HD can I replace with this one so it’s cooler than the one I have now? I am thinking to get a new HD as this one is too hot to be sitting on someone lap, and I am planning to make this TR as my portable DVD player and my vacation laptop to store photos, videos, etc, among others mobility purpose as it’s already too slow for some applications.

My TR3 originally came with a MK4004GAH.  Each new generation of toshiba drives seem to run cooler than the previous ones.  I had the MK4004GAH and a 8mm 20GB version from 2G ipod both in external cases awhile ago, and 20GB unit ran sigificantly hotter than the 40GB.

The MK6006GAH which I replaced the 4004 with ran noticeably cooler again, and I would assume with the non-zif 80gb unit would be better still.  If you have a look at the spec sheets for each drive, the power usage will give you an idea of heat generation.

Currently I’m running an Samsung MCBOE32G8APR, which being solid state generates pretty much no heat at all.  Though this isn’t a very cost effective option, as SSD’s are still rather expensive—however I use the machine for business and the speed increase justified the cost.

The 60GB unit does also have slightly higher transfer rates, so this might be a good option if you want cooler without spending too much money.

timeshifting, how much performance increase (faster processing and improved battery life) are we talking about here with replacing legacy HD with SSD HD?  This HD almost cost as much as the used TR (~$500)

I am interested and we of course know that HD has been the bottleneck then followed by RAM and processor.

I haven’t done any formal testing, but I’d say windows boots at least twice as fast, and everything opens noticeably faster as well.  So it helps a lot with anything disk bound.  I haven’t done any tests for battery life as yet though.  Personally I’m very happy with it, and I think it was money well spent.  I’d say the incremental improvement in productivity (open & save times) over the course of the day should more than pay for the drive in a few months.

OK.  I might get the SSD later when XP SP3 is out (to clean install my TR since haven’t done so since SP2), so I hope the HD price is cheaper by that time.  the thing is since i bought desktop for my daily PC (it used to be the TR, but it’s too slow), the TR hasn’t seen lot of time because of that.  I wonder if it’s worth it. 

I tend to keep the TR forever though.  I will even fix the camera when I am going to install the SSD HD.

How much is SSD HD now? What’s the biggest space available in market now?
