As a follow-up, this drive is still working fine, so I’d definitely recommend that anyone going to Tokyo (for whatever reason) to pick one up at a nice 50% discount (or more, depending on the exchange rate). I was originally worried that it was “clicking”, but it jut turns out that the 8007 has a louder head-parking sound than the 4007, so don’t panic. After 3 months of heavy use, and several low-level diagnostics, there’s no room for doubt in my mind.
Anyways…
Here’s the MK8007GAH page on Kakaku.com (a price tracking website for Japanese stores)

And here’s the one for the 32GB Samsung SSD which is TR-compatible (toshiba connector), just in-case you’re feeling rich

From the Kakaku site you can see who has the best price, and get a map to the store. Try google translate or try to message me if you want that info. For quick reference, I’ve shopped at ARK and BLESS and they were both fine (except the people at Bless were laughing at my Japanese, which was unusually good that day). Also, when you are looking at shops, consider the stores with these symbols (online translations don’t get names/places all the time):
æ±äº¬ - Tokyo
秋葉原 - Akihabara (Electronics district in Tokyo, go to JR Yamanote Akihabara Stn.)
外神田 - Soto-Kanda (part of Akihabara, they must have redistricted)
Also, don’t forget to stop by Yodobashi Akiba (you can’t miss it, it’s the biggest electronics store in the world) and get a case for your old 1.8” drive. I got a reasonably attractive black one by a company named “Groovy” for JPY 1880 (~USD 15) which is a steal.
If anyone wants a more detailed guide to computer shopping in Japan, let me know and I’ll do a more thorough post.
